Until now, there hasn’t been a civilization that completely lacked access to cavalry before the third age, the Vikings are the first. (Mounted scouts would still be available I guess) Personally, I imagine the fast-moving Berserkers will fill the role of horsemen, making them a very interesting unit. They are light infantry (normally countered by archers) yet they also possess the ability to take on archers. I’m curious to see how the developers have handled this.

Among the upcoming civilizations, there are some of the Americas that cannot use horses at all, such as the Mexica (Aztec) and Tawantinsuyu (Inca). Since they must counter ranged units relying solely on infantry and archers, the goal is to determine whether they can effectively counter those ranged units even in the late game, without access to cavalry. While they could simply include javelin throwers in their roster (For example, Eagle Warriors are javelin throwers in Age of Mythology), perhaps the developers wanted to experiment with whether infantry, specifically fast-moving light infantry, could get the job done on their own.

P.S. Looking at it again, it doesn’t actually state that the Berserker is light infantry. They might be a type of “infantry” that doesn’t fall into any specific armor category, much like Freeborn warriors. In that case, they could easily take on archers.

Yes, I expect they’ll end up porting the Aztecs and Incas from Age of Empires 3 to Age of Empires 4…
