I do not deny the existence of sneak attacks in the war. But I deny that sneak attacks are the easiest way to achieve victory in war. Killing unarmed villagers is very boring.And I think it would be very interesting if the armies were sneak attacking each other.And I agree with your opinion.

Other than building wall and outpost, you can defend your villagers at the back in many ways, for example, leave some units behind, set the rally point of new units to guard your resources etc. You can do a grand defensive battle at your base without getting sneak attacks. I think pro players watch the minimap all the time and listen to attack alert as well, so they react to sneak attack better than we do, and we may learn from them.
