what is the definition of failure?
And which games should be counted in? On Steam you have untold thousands os strategy games, many RTS, and most of them are complete garbage made from flipped assets, by students, trolls etc.
RTS game, even bad one, can sell for many years and eventually start making profit. If MOBA has no playerbase is dead-dead and can’t bring any profit. Even when it’s not f2p, nobody will play it due to shut down servers and because of that- won’t bring in a single $.
MP-only things like pvp/hero shooters, mobas, BRs dies a lot and FAST.
To be clear, I just think AoE4 is again designed from a wrong philosophy.
Here are 14 year old interviews.
From AoE4 lead designer an Interview about Universe at War, where he does focus to tell about innovative gameplay mechanics and Multiplayer.
And here is a second interview from Supreme Commander lead designer where he does focus how the game, even by lot of things to do, is manageable. How to design a game, where you do think on a strategic level, by making proper command and control systems.
Age of Empires 4, is clearly rather designed similar to Universe At War, than to Supreme Commander.
Supreme Commander was a big success, Universe At War wasn’t.
Dota and LoL aren’t RTS, lol. RTS was meant for SP, MP was barely a thing when RTS first started to bloom. Sure, RTS is super fun in MP but most RTS games will thrive when played in SP
2 entirely different genres. It is like saying AoE2 is a FPS and CoD is an RTS
For games that have good PVP
Check AoE2s playercounts and check the MP playercounts. You’ll notice that the majority is unaccounted for. Where could they be? SP. MP is all well and good but at the end of the day, saying RTS was meant to be PvP and most players prefer PvP is a falsehood
Um, no. Ever heard of Fortnite? CoD Modern Warfare(Warzone)? Pretty sure those are the 2 largest games out there right now. SP is of course making a comeback in popularity, look at Witcher 3 and Jedi: Fallen Order but PvP MP games are still the gaming industries bread and butter
what a habit of this forume to queue each word. omg.
If u want to argue provide links with current active users of SP, who keep playing. without a source it’s just bs. There just no data for active users who play SP. So allow to do any statements, why?
Do u remember SC2 mem “SC2 is dead” (it started since 2013).
SC2 main focus was on 3 large DLC for SP, guess what? SC2 is dying and loosing people. Cause no new content.
They literally were selling the game as single player campaign.
after each release they got new blood, but with poor updates/no changes for MP → they were loosing players.
Players were waiting a patch for 8 months, before Heart of the Swarm. Cause Devs were focused on Single player content.
Imagine in aoe4 - someone designed campaign, great mission/history.
They released the game and multiplayer balance is broken, the balance change would affect SinglePlayer content.
Either way than u start creating multiplayer u have to select or balance between.
In part relic doing great job, they have multiplayer game with potentially unlimited content for SP campaigns or multiplayer with new civs.
I would repeat once again: one of the reason for “SC2 dead mem” was - sometimes it did not recieve updates in time cause SP priority.
yes, that’s thee reason why they did the game free. cause it were perfect and had no problems. blizzard and charity…Sadly u did not read the whole sentence… it was >> Mem “SC2 is dead”
aoe2 provide only multiplayer stats.
So u dont have data for single player games to do any predictions.
(also I dont know any SP players who would play in a game more than 1 year… they just run out of steam to play against AI/same campaigns again and again…)
Why do u not read whole sentence? Blizzard focused sales as SP game.
Company which in love with money → were selling DLCs to get money.
It’s exactly(or very very similar) case to the suggestion above: create successful SP game/campaign → after the success move players to multiplayer.
One small problem, sometimes they dont change balance for 8 months, is it multiplayer approach?
Why cause they were creating the DLC for SP.
PS it just did not have competitors. So the game were successful for some time, after Dota/LoL/other PvP game with tourneys came → sc2 start loosing players.
U never create a good MP game without hard work…it’s impossible to just move SP players into MP, without developing MP.
In that field aoe4 have a good chances it focuses in both areas.
Please quote where I said it was perfect and had no problems?
Exactly. You figure out how many people play MP then you compare to AoE2 DE steam charts. Of course there is the MS store playercount but no idea how to get those
Spirit of the Law did a video but he took it down for some reason. Or maybe I just imagined it.
Also, AoE2.net still not up, anyone know what is wrong with it?
How many do you know?
Prior to StarCraft II ‘s release, StarCraft: Brood War had been called the most successful esport, featuring its own ranking system, and it had been referred to as the national pastime in South Korea, where there were two television channels dedicated to broadcasting professional StarCraft matches.[3] The series’ history with professional competition had brought about the creation of the Korean e-Sports Association (KeSPA) and the professional team league it administered, StarCraft Proleague. As such, the original was considered the founding esport of the country’s successful infrastructure and scene.[4] This led to high expectations for the sequel’s success as an esport, but also a conflict between KeSPA and Blizzard Entertainment, sparking a three-year long legal battle between them.[5] This meant KeSPA would not be transitioning to StarCraft II upon its release.
The first large StarCraft II tournaments occurred during the beta testing phase in the months prior to release, the most notable being the HDH Invitational[6][7] and esports player Sean “Day[9]” Plott’s King of the Beta.[8] The success of both viewership and sponsorship of these early events cemented high expectations for professional play of the title going into its July 2010 release.
Either way, I dunno what you’re smoking but RTS usually thrives when it is SP. AoE2 had no MP going on until forgotten Empires revived it, yet there was still SP going on
thx for copypaste. Is it wikipedia?
Without reasons behind the scene ur knowledge is misleading.
When Dota, LoL, SC2 took place on stage → SC2 started loosing the positions, so they made game free. So yes, it was the most popular until Dota/LoL/Hots/CS:GO.
And now after 10 years, the game wont recieve support and new updates.
Meanwhile, over games are developing.
If the definition of success for age4 id boom at start and live for 3-5 years, than same aproach as SC2 would be awesome → create great single player content, release DLCs, start loosing playerbase, keep saying that it was the most successful game a few years ago, make game free, start microtransactions cause no more DLCs.
keep repeating “the most successful game of the past”.
Meanwhile Dota/LOL (designed for MP only) → continue developing.
such a lie, we played on Voobly…Voobly keep game alive.
Cause Voobly, game recieve FullHD support, (not in aoeHD, but generic AOC was patched with FullHD support).
Three official expansion packs were released for HD Edition . The first, The Forgotten , is based on a fan-made expansion, The Forgotten Empires .
It was made on Voobly and for multiplayer, after that it recieve full expansion for aoeHD.
I’m not surprised, MOBAs and FPS have been more popular than RTS for a long time. In fact, when SC2 was made, RTS was falling and FPS and MOBAs were rising. SC2 got drowned out by more popular genres.
How many RTS games do you know that last 10 years and receive support and new updates? AoE2 is an extreme rarity. In fact, it actually didn’t really last 10 years, it was kept alive but didn’t receive support and new updates until MS noticed and saw the profit they could make for little investment.
That would be AoE2
It isn’t because they are designed for MP only it is because people fine them fun (I don’t like MOBAs)
You wanna know what the biggest FPS franchises are? SP with a little MP on the side (Halo, CoD, FarCry, Metal Gears Solid)
liquipedia - check Daut, a lot of tourneys before 2013. Or voobly forum and old aoe posts on aoezone. About forgotten empires - u can check wikipedia.
Ask any progamer/streamer in the chat to learn history of the game.
again claims without the proof. Check the best sellings games on wikipedia
No, dont
but example is a proof that SP games have short lives, they selling game, they do next new game.
And they do new game, not even DLC…
__
it feels like it become personal conversation. LoL
I am referring to RTS games. Only an idiot would think that ANY RTS could the most successful game of all time. Also, you said most successful, not best selling. A game can sell a lot of copies and not be successful (i.e. Cyberpunk 2077)
I can’t find anything about AoE2 on liquipedia could you provide a link?
There is no wikipedia page for FE
As much as I hate to say it, AoE2 was dead until FE made the mod. That revived the game.
Because SP games tell a story. Franchises like Halo tell an even bigger story (which is why I prefer Halo over CoD or FarCry) I find much more joy going through the campaign of Halo then playing a round of Warzone. But it doesn’t matter what I prefer, most people who play FPS like MP. Just like most people who play RTS prefer SP
Now everyone who is a veteran in RTS talks about APM and competitive. I don’t know why the obsession with this is.
The reason you end up playing multiplayer is because the single player game ends up hooking you. It is essential that the casual gamer is prioritized and not the veteran ultra-mega PRO.
We can agree that we all start out by playing in campaigns and against AI. (At least an overwhelming majority)
I think RTS games are starting to make a comeback, not only are we getting AOE4 but also new games like Sanctuary RTS (the developers from forged alliance forever are making a new “Supreme Commander” type game).
There are still a lot of people who like playing RTS games.
As far as AOE4 being a success, if they listen to their core player base i think it will.

Mine is only i7 and you have i9 coming out. Actual gamers invest thousands for the latest system.
i5 is so basic nowadays yet it is running such beautiful graphics.
Even TW systems are so basic
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system.

Yeah so I really don’t get the excuse “uh you need high level PC
But if your system is sooo poor that it doesn’t even run these, then everyone else shouldn’t have to suffer.
You gave the minimum requirements. The recommended specs
CPU: Intel i7 4 core processor, 8th Generation

VIDEO CARD: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or equivalent
PIXEL SHADER: 5.1
VERTEX SHADER: 5.1

You put CoH3 graphics into AoE4 and these will skyrocket. Probably at least 16 GB RAM and a GTX 2060 super, maybe a little lower. Not to mention CPU would be i8, 9th or 10th gen. Then you add VRAM, it is already like 8GB of VRAM, what if you put this in AoE4? almost double the amount.
It really isn’t that poor.
Intel i5-11400F
8GB RAM
GTX 1650
4 VRAM
Decent, not good but decent.
I’ve been needing to upgrade my RAM for awhile but haven’t gotten around to it, got a few things going on in life that I don’t need to be spending money on RAM, heh.
