Unlikely the cost will be worth the effort. Developing a base game, with just being able to move units around, animations, maps, textures etc easily goes into millions of dollars. You need to have a COD level release to just make up for that. And that comes before any other content. This is why it is easier to add new content to existing games than developing new games. This is something WE never quite understood. They are better off reviving aoe1 than start from scratch with an idea like AOE5. Heck, even AOE4 is too expensive to add new content.
So yeah, do you find those millions in an RTS? probably not.
There’s a big need for AoE5 and a new AoM in some fans’ minds, due to large gap in what was delivered vs. what could have been since AoE2’s launch. My opinion only, of course. Player stats might back that up a bit
Did you play Rise of Nations before? If not, you might enjoy
I’m sure everyone can agree none of the current games fit something like WW2 or the Cold War. So the current games do not in fact “cover all historical eras nicely”. And I don’t see how that is at all relevant to the success of a hypothetical AoE5.
From what i remember of that pathfinding presentation by the AOE2 devs the issue is that they cant actually use modern pathfinding technology like how AOE4 works cause that would also fundamentally change how the units behave in a way that people also hate.
Part of the issue of a long running game is that people get used to the jank so you cant actually remove it either
also noted in the presentation that apparently MS or someone just lost all the codes so forgotten empires and the other AOE developers kinda had to also jank it out themselves
so I agree that its not state of the art but this is probably never going to be a state of the art game at this point
And that is why new games are better than expanding older video games.
The reason I play AoE III isn’t out of nostalgia or because I think it’s unbeatable, but rather because it comes closest to what I look for in a video game of this genre.
You’re kidding right? AOM has the same path finding as aoe4, except the mobility is dialed down a bit. The primary reason aoe4 feels so flowly is reduced collision boxes and no wall offs with buildings reducing the algorithmic load.
I’ve heard on Discord that a lot of users are getting chat-banned.
How are people supposed to message each other if their chat gets banned? The worst part is, knowing how things are, they might be letting some shitty AI decide who gets banned and who doesn’t.
I stopped sending reports a while back because I kept getting an "Error, message not sent" notification. The feature is still bugged, or else there is simply no one responding to the messages—so yes, I do think there is an AI managing the AoE3 lobbies.
The worst part is that there were already reports from AoE4 and AoE2 players saying they got temporarily banned for insults, even though they were the ones being insulted. It’s a classic case of the criminal reporting the victim as the criminal just to get away with it.
What’s annoying is the terrible lack of features across the different games. One game lacks something that another already has, and we’re talking about basics, specially in AoE3:
1).- Match-start sound alert:
AoE2, AoE4, AoM: Check
AoE3: Non-existent.
Update: Only in this latest patch—after… 21 years—have they finally added the alert.
2).- A working reporting system:
AoE2, AoE4, AoM: Check
AoE3: ERROR, message not sent (This really shows how the game was abandoned for 4 years. Shame of game).
*Update: I’ve tested it recently, and there’s no real pattern as to why it works sometimes and not others. My theory is that it only works before a player quits… which leaves the door open for them to insult you, quit, and then you can’t report them. It’s a garbage system. And what’s worse, they’ve probably replaced it with that S###### AI.
3).- Improved graphics system to generate realistic mountains:
