Imperial age upgrade for mercenaries must be done in the Tavern

The 5th age mercenary imperial age upgrade in European civilizations should be removed. Just like outlaws can get all age upgrades in the Tavern, mercenaries should be able to get all age upgrades in the Tavern. Because mercenaries cannot be upgraded in specially adjusted era wars, such as the empire era and the post-imperial era. This situation makes European civilizations such as Sweden, Germany and the Dutch unplayable with mercenaries. Therefore, all age upgrades of mercenaries must be done in the Tavern. In this way, the game can become more playable.

Mmmm Europeans are the less affected by starting at imperial age. They can live with that

This is a great idea, it would even the playfield and finally let Asian civs get the technology as well

Los bonus de los polĂticos, alianzas, estados federales y maravillas se pierden en ese tipo de partidas. QuedarĂa ajustar el juego completo para este modo de jugar.

isn’t the imperial age meant to represent the rise of professional armies and the downfall of mercenaries?

Besides Germany, Sweden and Dutch have merc upgrade cards, and they all have mercenary contractor as an age 5 politician.

To to mention arabs for ethiopia and NY for USA.

Lol, no? This might come as a surprise but but exist side by side even to this day, with a prevalent role in geopolitics. Here is an example America's Addiction to Mercenaries - The Atlantic

But use of mercenaries waned a bit during the Napoleonic period.

Mercenaries were of course used more later when countries wanted to look clean and uninvolved.

Actually that is a bit of a difficult topic especially in the napoleonic era. They just got less pay and were called troop contigents from sister republics f.e. the helvetic republic had to give napoleon troops and so did the dutch or often were directly integrated in normal regiments, in a way they got regularised which often also meant less pay.

They were just less direct mercenaries and more forced ones.

Overall i think in general it should be that all civs that have regular acces to mercs should be able to upgrade them to imperial in the corresponding building, especially pressing for the Asian civs which have cards that guarantee a specifc type of merc but you never see because of a lack of imperial upgrades later on, in the case of china you even get 2 cards for their specific one wich is just doubly sad.

it was brought about specifically as a game mechanic to let people playu with all the wonky units they made.

people love merc spamming as much as the recpients tend to think this is boring or op

the age5 change was a compromise to allow strong mercs in nr20 or team games and stop (in theory) all the op merc builds in supremacy.

That is a buff to European civs which is not needed. Giving them tech in tavern will free up options for age 5 age up and make their age 5 stronger. Euro civs are already the strongest in late stage.

Mercenaries already improve for free every age.

No, they dont. Why do you think that?? They are suppoused to be outclassed by standard units, so they have ner should get imperial upgrades neither massable capabilities

My bad. I think thay are like outlaws. Okay, but I don’t see any other important improvements from the Imperial age that need to be so hard to make space for. What the problem in current situation.

I don’t mind. I love when there are a lot of different choices. But for the Germans, for example, there is a 3rd age card that improves them. In addition, they are improved with regular cards. That is, when playing as mercenaries, you do not invest in improvements, but only accumulate gold and shipments. Well, that’s the gameplay. Not too bad by the way. And at imperial age, they become generally invincible. Dutch Elmettos won’t let you lie.

Outclassed? Hmmm, for some reason they are called mercenaries they are heavy gold cost but with higher stats.

They meant to be capable of destroy an army but when lost difficult to replace just as they are now.

For me they are easier to replace. German player camping at base and send all vills to coin… typical at mid elo…they don’t need macro no need hunt, just pure coin and send back to back 1k coin merc shipments and win…in late game civs like sweden german can send all vills to estate and spam…no need for res balance, macro, vill distribution, map control, because your unit only cost one type of resource which is plentiful in your base and doesn’t try to move away from your TC…

Which gets worse with Ethiopian camels. I have seen a 40v Ethiopia just spamming camels in team games.

Also, previously we had South Africa with dutch economy…great ideas

A regular silver mine is only 2k gold, meanning you can only build about 20 merc units costing 100gold each. Most of them are more expensive. So you cant camp in base.

You are forced to go outside base to get more gold and expose your vills to cav raids.

If you want to get gold from behind base, every state cost 600 wood plus all upgrades on it. All in all is not easy to make mercenary only, what you save on other improvements you pay for by exposing your units or spending in buildings.

Ger is broken for a reason. Do you realise there are more than one coin mine near your base? That’s at keast 4k coin. And on certain maps there are 5k coin big mines. Also german has 1k coin shipment.

All german merc shipments contains extra mercs, one or two more than the standard amount.

That is still pretty low ammount that requires you to controll the map beforehand successfully with your Ulans and other units aswell as potentially a trade route.

NVM that spies are a thing aswell as are regular counter units.
