Improvements for the singelplayer skirmish

first of all, i would like to say that i find that Retold is great. Nevertheless, there are things i would like to see improved in the future. I am mainly referring to the single player skirmish mode. I like to play 12 Player (AI) 4 Teams

  1. better randomness: I like to play with random civs (opponents as well as my own). But what I noticed is that with the current random option the main gods double too often. What i mean that you get in 12 player match 4 x Hades 3 x gaia etc… I have nothing against doubling but currently there are too many. I like it when there is as much variation as possible.

  2. More AI personality / variation: I would like to see that each AI Player play a littel bit other then the rest of the AI in the game. One player plays aggressively, another ultra boomy, another defends with walls, one usually only tries mythical units etc. . (in the original you could choose from several AI types.)
    more variability is always better

  3. Choose colors without them determining your position in the team. It’s cool and important for multiplayer to be able to determine your position in the team by choosing your color, but for me in single player, at least, I don’t care about the position. So I would be happy to have an option where you can turn off this setting so that it is randomly selected and you can choose the color freely.

  4. a better and clearer way of displaying the gods of opponents on the screen when creating the game. Because if you only want to have a selection of certain gods for the opponents, this is only displayed with a question mark. with 12 players, it becomes really confusing what you have given to which opponent.
If the randomness improves, this point is only of limited importance

  5. Wonder victory: I’m probably a minority, but I think AOM (original) is the only game in the AOE series where Wonder victory worked well against the AI. AI built wonders and attacked them. And I loved it back then and think it’s a shame that it’s been taken out.
I would be happy if they could bring it back as a setting option. I would like to have more options to win than just defeating all opponents. But it is important that the AI reacts to it again

  6. more interesting maps that deviate from the standard: what i would have liked are maps that differ from the standard maps like a map where the players of a team spawn one after the other, a map where you can block Paths with bolders (like in the campain) or maps like AOE 3 have them ( Historical Baittel maps)

  7. new Gamemodes: Like Empier wars or a mode where you can randomly choose between two gods from all pantheons at age up (I know that probably won’t work because of the technologies but it would be fun) or a mode where you level up with a minor gods but only get the GP. For MU and Techs you have to conquering and holding temples from minor gods, whisch are scattered around the map. Of course, the AI must also be able to understand and act on this

This is very important. My current issue with the AI is that it always plays the same. Even its timings are predictable. Even if you choose a different personality (there are very few), you know beforehand how it’s going to play. Playing against a human, you usually don’t know beforehand if they are going to boom or rush or turtle unless that’s the only viable strategy of the civ they are playing. You need to scout them to find out. Adding a random personality can add a small element of surprise and unpredictability that can help make playing against the AI more fun.

So this a topic I also have interest in! I’ll go point by point with my thoughts.

  1. So this is actually what we expect from randomness. If you’re familiar with the birthday problem, if you have a group of 23 people, there’s about a 50% chance that any 2 of them have the same birthday (out of 365 days without leap years), and that quickly gets very close to 100% at around 60 if I recall correctly. So when you have 12 players with just 13 gods (if you have Freyr), then suddenly it’s extremely unlikely to not have repeats and not unexpected to have even more than just 2 repeating. However, once they add more pantheons, they could also perhaps split random into ‘random’ and ‘full random’, like AoE2, where ‘full random’ is what we have now and ‘random’ specifically avoids repeats.

  2. Fully agreed with this. As you mention, in legacy there were more options, including the ability to set it to random so that you didn’t know which personality you’d be up against ahead of time. I’d like to see that too!

  3. Fully agreed with this too! Really nothing else to add.

  4. Here at least you can hover over the question mark to see a list of the gods it includes. I suppose if you select an entire pantheon (i.e. all 3 of the say greek gods and no one else), they could have a “greeks” icon like in legacy, but otherwise idk how they’d clearly convey that many possible combinations.

  5. I think this would be a nice sort of classic feature to include. I was also a little surprised that there wasn’t an option to disable wonders/wonder age like there currently is an option to disable titans. While it isn’t a huge deal personally to me, I always support more options!

  6. More variety is always a plus! The only issue I can see is that the ai should reasonably be able to play whatever they come up with, which might limit them somewhat. As far as I know they are still working on getting them to play water maps okay.

  7. Empire Wars could be fun. Maybe a little less appealing since Age 1 doesn’t take as long as it does in say AoE2, but it could still be cool starting with a little town anyway. Could make Age 2 free and instant in this mode if they want you to effectively start in Age 2 but still want to let you choose a god.

They need a classic game mode that has god powers only being usable once except for Atlanteans that can use their titan powers the same amount of times it was used in the Titans expansion while also make wonder act like it was in the Titans expansion too. That would allow people to be able to play AoMR and have a bit of the old classic feeling.

There is room for one more option so they should have allow Wonders to be added so can turn it on or off for any host games.

Did the beta have a Starting and Ending Age option? Because I thought it did.
I’m pretty sure you could limit the game to end in Mythical Age and therefor prevent Wonder Age.
They should certainly add that.

I checked a Beastyqt video where he was hosting some custom games and choosing a starting and ending age was not a option which makes sense because you wouldn’t have god power, techs and myth units from any ages before the starting age you choose.

Then I remember that wrong.
It could still be a thing.
Either you simply don’t have the Minor god unique things or it just defaults to certain Minor Gods for each major god.

AoE3DE also has a starting Age option that simply doesn’t give you your Age up rewards from the previous Ages so you miss out on Wonders, Alliances or Federal States too which is a high disadvantage over just missing politicians.

Just because a setting would have downsides doesn’t mean it should simply not exists.
