Is anyone playing / enjoying Return of Rome?

I know it had a somewhat rocky launch but hasn’t it been updated quite a bit?

multiplayer is almost like non-existent maybe I see 1 game every 2nd day and I play quite a lot against AI on multiplayer lobbies

i think most of the ones that do purchase ROR is more for new mechanics and they can enjoy them in single players instead

I like more playing the campaigns, since the single player AI seems too weak for a moderate level (I just knock down one TC and the enemy, even owning several others, will already surrender). But very few ROR campaigns have appeared :frowning:

I play it a lot and enjoy it. I like it because it plays quicker and is more straight-forward than the other games in the series.

I love it, but I can’t play it because there are no multiplayer games.
I already have all the campaigns completed on difficult and all the achievements.

I hope they add the rest of the classic campaigns and add new content.

bought it just for the Romans (AoE2) civ, wish they could sell the Romans (AoE2) as a separate DLC with new campaigns for them like Aegidius, Stilicho, etc.

I played some multiplayer matches for a while at the beginning, and few campaings. Now I play Romans in the aoe2 side, while waiting for the RoR side multiplayer stage to be again populated to some degree.

Being aoe1 in the aoe2 engine and getting balance updates, is admittedly the most modern way to play aoe1. It is also very satisfying, content wise (since it’s the whole aoe1).

In a few words, I play it a lot.

PS1: I demand AUTOMATIC RANKED matchmaking system to be implemented in RoR too, to further help towards the repopulation.

PS2: Bronze Age collapse; Sea Peoples alert :warning::

I regret buying this DLC.

Why?

I buy dlc for either multiplayer or live updates. I could have pirated the dlc for single player content. The content itself is very low while the price is high.

Yes, I have more hype for new dlcs for RoR than for AoE 2 (I like classical antiquity more than medieval times, that’s why I have AoEO and AoM higher than AoE 2)…

It is very expensive for me and I hope the price drops even more…

I don’t play it nor enjoy it. I think people buy it mostly for achievements. Pro-players and YTubers buy it for contents also. The only good thing about RoR is unit group moves with the slowest one’s speed, basically benefits by AoE 2 engine. That’s it.

I played it a little and dont like it.All military units cost food and gold so if you run out of one good luck massing something to counter attack the enemy.

That’s not true, not all units cost food and gold. Bronze age Chariot Archers and Chariots; and Iron Age Scythe Chariots do not require gold. Further, one could sell food or wood for gold, if needed.

i prefer to play campaign rather than multiplay.

I still play it and enjoy it.

You still need to build a market and research wheel to enable those and its only available for some civis not all.

I bought it because it was on sale on steam. My makn goal was also to hunt the achievements.

I have to say i enjoyed the campaigns more than i thought i would. The game feels faster, because you usuallydon’t do stuff like 4tc booms, which is refreshing.

I wouldn’t want to play multiplayer tho. Maybe i could be wrong but i feel like the balancing is pretty awful in this game given that you have no trash units to counter some units. I felt like romans have like 0 options against these cav archer from persians for example

My problem with RoR is that it didn’t improve enough over AoE1(DE). It only added surface level AoE2(DE) features like trade, gates and formations.

Ironically one reason why RoR feels so wrong to me is because it runs so well.
In AoE1(DE) the badly balanced economy and stuff like that were not really that noticeable because I was busy trying to get my units to go where I want them to go.
Now with most of the big bugs and issues gone I wasn’t distracted when looking at the core gameplay mechanics.
AoE1 villagers are a lot more efficient then AoE2 villagers while AoE1 units cost about the same (sometimes less sometimes more) turning the game into a spam fest, if you even get to the late game.
Tool Age is to aggressive compared to Feudal Age.
Bronze Age has too fast booming compared to Castle Age.
Iron Age as too much unit spamming (especially Chariots) compares to Imperial Age.

And then there are the massive stat difference between units. Upgrade are basically twice as good compared to AoE2. So missing an upgrade is twice as impactfull, yet civilisations are missing a lore more technologies compared to AoE2.
Ironically AoE1 civilisations are play a lot more different compared to each other despite having no unique units or unique technologies.

The sad part is that they considered addressing some of those issues by adding new unit upgrades for units like the Slinger or Axeman. Traces of those units can still be seen in the game files.

I think if they add ranked, and allow people to try it for free in an event RoR should get a lot more healthy.

And then you can add new units and such in the new DLCs
