You are probably tired of this topic, but let me point on this, do not you think they are stikcing to much to AoE 2 and not being innovative at all? its not that a big mistake? (Im telling this as a regular AoE 2 player that love the saga. But I have worked as a game developer and I know what I am speaking about.)
The reason it is a mistake is because they left behind innovation. We already have AoE 2 DE with great graphics, do they really think people will move to a game that have same mechanics just becuase its AoE 4? I dont think so…
They could innovate and add archers to towers and castles so they dont throw arrows magically for example, they could also add:
*Operators to siege weapons
**Innovative animations or building destruction. (looking exactly same to age 3, nothing new)
**Add ships with people that put a bridge to land or landing animations like in other games.
**First person hero camera,
**Ladders to climb walls
**Day and night transitions
**Dirty to their clothes after start fighting
**An original innovative way to make units get out of the building after creation quee is finished.
**Siege operators and once they are killed you can steal the weapon for a certain amount of time
I mean they could add a lot of things but the only innovation is units through forest (you can do it in aoe 3 and its better developed in acenstors legacy) and units in walls (even mobile games allow that).
So to be honest I am really dissapointed, I see nothing innovative but a copy of age 2 everywhere, they were so mediocre by not risking anything. I am just wondering why did it take to much time to develope then?
The next video is from a 2004 game:
Units coming from inside of the building after created/trained
Ships landing animations
Units attacking from ships
You can steal ships and siege weapons
All siege weapons got operators
First person camera for the hero
After ship gets destroyed soldiers swim to land and keep fighting with less live
Soldiers drowning animations
Camera rumble after ram hits
A big, etc
EDIT: GUYS MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE VIDEO BEFORE YOU REPLY. **Must of replies are out of context, I am not talking about change the game, I am talking adding innovation more in line to the year 2021 where we have last generation graphics and features… That 2004 game showed in the video is a perfect sample of the possibilities a game like AoE 4 can achieve nowdays. DO not be mind closed, thanks. ( wonder why we are getting mobile graphics in AoE4…)
theres a game ahead its time called Rise and Fall, look for it. They added a special feature where you can change camera perspective to the hero viewing. You could even use him to fight enemies, its so fun and that game is so addictive. Its an RTS but innovative in many ways like that one. The game just not popular because was not fnished and could not be distributed. SO its free right now.
You don’t have to spend time finding videos. My point it, that any good rts doesn’t have that feature, as RTS games require constant attention, you don’t have time to go into a first-person view
No Its AoE4 - and “as a game developer” you should know that the change from 2d to 3d alone makes the possibilities of the game quite different.
From what we’ve seen AoE4 is vastly different - take the mongols from aoe4 and put them into aoe2 - the game wouldnt work anymore.
For what?
Do you wanna see a huge explosion and some special effects from micheal bay(if yes then go watch transformers )? Its not like there are too many ways that buildings can collapse.
So you’re worried that AoE4 hasnt unique mechanics so adding some animations would be sufficient for you?
Do you know how the troops get up the wall in aoe4? Because i dont, maybe the get ported up - maybe the use ladders.
Maybe for campaign, however i dont see how this is someting you want in a rts that isnt total war. I couldn’t imagine using this in a hectic sittuation without losing the overview of the map-situation.
I don’t know if this fits the franchise. The original dev wanted that in aoe its always “bright and inviting”.
More like you know nothing about RTS games. You named a single, unknown, dead RTS game that has first-person mode, and then say I don’t know RTS games. Ok
There are enough innovations already, maybe too much so it’s a risk already.
Not sure what the OP wants, a game which doesnt feel lile AoE anymore? If it was after me I would have gone the Starcraft 1 > Starcraft 2 way, hardly any innovations at all, because it already works.
Ps: and yes, first person in AoE is an absolute waste of resources. I remember Earth 2160 had it, no one used it, game is dead btw. It only makes some sense in Homeworld for cinematic effects, HW being a more eye-candy game, but even there hardly anyone uses it.
No, it doesn’t. This is not The Sims. In Age of Empires, time is measured in years. Alternation between day and night wouldn’t be in accordance to the countdown of a Wonder victory.
As for the rest, I don’t know what the original poster is complaining about. From what I’ve seen, there is quite enough innovation.
AoE is so popular because is a simple game. there is no a lot of complexity of economy, the counter system is pretty easy to learn. You can put into game a lot of other stuff, etc, but in that case the game will lose simplicity and popularity.
and i know there is a lot of people who says “but the game XYZ has this stuff, i would like to see it in AOE”… so play game XYZ or crate mod if you can.
But it would fine to see in mongols campaign, like whey are camping and so on. There are some features that might work fine in campaign and not competitive I guess.
nothing complex here, did you watch the video? most of them are visual aesthetics that would add a lot of innovation and visual enhancement to the game…
