The fact they still have ashis that run at lightspeed can’t be caught out of position is problematic. Combined with maphack shrines that you can’t burn down fast enough before 2 more replace it, and that it’s almost impossible to catch Japan’s army out of position, and that ashis are excellent raiding units.
All these are just some of the reasons Japan needs a nerf.

I also agree with that. A little nerf like Ashigaru Speed of 4 and therefore lower cost of this unit would be really good for the game, because it can be really frustrating to play against. For example with the Germans, because in small numbers even the Crossbows get countered by Ashigaru.
I have been bothered by Ashi’s speed just like you. mate. I have always wished Ashi got slower. But recently I came up with the idea of speeding up xbows instead so they can fight back better. Making their speed at least to 4.25 might make a difference. I hope my idea get examined by you all and devs to see if it is good or bad.
I remember Japan being the only civ that could go toe to toe with the most broken civs, ie, Sweden’s first few months, Ports with the 5% gather rate at the start, and Dutch before the coin gather rate reduction, etc.
Just slow down ashi speed, and I think they should be fine. Most pro players think japan is fine as is, it’s just differently designed, which punishes you the moment you take your foot off the gas, especially at lower levels.
4 speed ashi would make so many japan mains super salty, but I do think it needs to be done
Yes, 4 would be ideal but 4.15 at least. That way they’d still be “fast musketeers”, but only slightly faster.

Nerfing ashigaru should only happen with buffing their other units or making them easier to get, like the consulate japan units (maybe allow daymios to train them).
yumi are already one of the strongest skirm types (19 dmg instead of 15 or 16) with a 20% damage card age 2, daymio aura (age 2) and consulate passive bonus (7% damage). Nerfing ashi speed would let the other units shine a bit more. The only japan unit in need of some sort of buff (imo) is samurai but the stats are good on them i just think they should be 90f 90c
4 speed ashi would mean they are the worst musk in age 2, cuz expensive and no real advantage over other musketeer. They get outraded by literally everything except pikes
170 hp and 24 dmg, with a 20% dmg card and daymio aura. not really “the worst”. the trouble is their speed makes them so… well they catch up with and crush age 2 anti infantry like crossbows and avoid musket on musket fights if they dont want them. speed is too powerful of a trait. if they had to keep the speed I’d like to see their base damage dropped radically to like, 20
the dmg is only 15% and they are also a lot more expensive than all other muskets in age 2, so they have to be stronger. 20 damage? so they can tickle everything? and in lategame they would be really bad then, since speed is not as important any more (also odnt have the aa speed upg)
Japan also gets military drummers and the speedboost from the golden pavilion, so you can get the speed back…
Btw, what is the speed of an ashigaru once military drummers and the speed buff to toggled? 5.5? Lol
Japan doesn’t have military drummers. They have a card for 10% samurai speed/cost and a card for Daimyo speed. With the pavilion speed aura ashi get 4.725 speed though it’s not the best setting in most circumstances imo.

as a note you can currently, easily, get ashi to like, 32 attack in age 2, and even more with specific builds. there is no actual situation where ashi are actually a weak musket. they are a little poor against cavalry ironically but i wouldnt hate to see their melee dmg to multiplier ratio tweaked a little
