Yes. Monitor is either an ironclad or an early 20th gunboat.
Pointless name change since people will think its some type of demolition ship.
No. 20 characters.
Yes. Pointless nitpicky name that adds nothing.
No. 20 characters.
Again pointless name change that only satisfies the Wikipedia nerds. To the average person especially a new comer to the game, Bomb ###### would sound like a demolition unit. Imagine someone thinking they’re clever when they go age IV and try to destroy the enemy navy with this “Bomb vessel” only to find out it’s a long range artillery unit that gets destroyed by attacking ships.
Better call musketeer machine gunners.
Better call your response a nothing burger.
The most constructive discussion ever.
Anyway, it’s such a small change which just goes hand in hand with these Devs that appreciate more attention to detail than the OG Devs.
If someone is struggling to grasp what a Bomb Ketch is, again, during a game which covers the whole Age of Sail during the Early Modern Era, then I’m not too sure what to say! I’m surprised they worked out that a Monitor lobs shells rather than displays digital content.
Anyway, to bring the topic back, I’m pretty sure during Industrial Ages most Asian civs modernising their fleets would have incredibly similar Bomb Ships anyway. Age I to III is where you’d find the most aesthetically Asian vessels.
@SirBarnzy1 I can relate with you when it comes to changing the name for a unit that doesn’t fit it. I gave a response on a post recently on the [Age of Empires 2] forum section where a user came with suggestions for new regional units. One of these units would be the “Traction Trebuchet” which would go by the same name.
I voiced my opinion on this where I thought it would be better if this “Traction Trebuchet” went by the name “Mangonel” instead, since the prior name is a modern term, and where the current [Mangonel] in-game together with the other upgrades for this unit line were renamed to:
Catapult → Reinforced Catapult → Siege Catapult (Instead of: Mangonel → Onager → Siege Onager).
The only responses that I got from this comment that I made were people complaining that it would be “Confusing” for the player base to rename it or answers like this: “this game has survived for 20 years without ‘revolutions’ like this.”
The term “Mangonel” may have been used interchangeably for other catapults in history but it does apparently refer to the “Traction Trebuchet” specifically.
Putting this aside, I found a sketch for a supposed gunboat that was used by the Chinese during the 19th century. According to the description of this sketch this boat was apparently cheaply made and created out of flat-iron or built from wood sheathed in iron.
Steamboats are somewhat “out of the scope” of the game design. Right now only US and Mexican have regular access to them.
I do prefer every civ get some sort of steamboats (at least visually) in the late game though.
