In the statement of the delay of the game, they have said that it will not be the same as it was.
I believe that there are things that do not affect the essence of the game but modernize it. It would be unnecessary to wait for a DLC, because it does not affect the original gameplay.
This would be:
Unique wonders
Different skins of troops per faction (at least change helmet and shield for troops and sails of ships)
Different interface menu by civilization (as AOEII)
Carthage and Phenicia with new type of buildings (different to Rome and Greece respectively)
Unique units and decorative objects only for the campaigns, as well as different skin for the heroes.
Different characteristics of the maps, since we currently have all the types of terrain and trees mixed in a random map.
New game animals.
I think that if they increased the population, and made a complete reform with the farms (walking on them and replanting them), these changes should not be so drastic.

Too late. At this point this don’t will happen. They are trying fixing pathfinder and replace many art placeholders. There is a lot of things to replace.

These are done.

How do you know that?
The delay was for an indefinite period. With so much time we do not know all the features that they will touch up.
@korowizard
There’s never enough time, but they better take their time and listen carefully to all the beta participants
On the other hand they’ll have to watch out for their project not becoming a moving target, so they need to stick to some primary goals. Like with the first version, they still have the chance to do it better again with the next version (AOE II DE).

Instead of adding new skins for each tileset I would much prefer elite unit upgrades having different graphics to their weaker counterparts.
I would have loved to tempt people with a download link to Beyond the Indus Unofficial Expansion but progress has pretty much halted since the announcement of Definitive Edition .

I’ve seen it and I think it’s wonderful.
Luckily we have a delay for an indefinite period, there is no longer a deadline, and now they will focus on bringing an DE based on the comments and suggestions. and I understand that they have rethought many things that have not yet shown.
