The HRE is one of the most interesting political entities in history, thats why I chose them as an example, they are extremley underutilised. Don’t get me wrong every civ in the game has potential to be complex, and I understand there needs to be some more streamlined basic civs, but i completely disagree that the HRE is truley unique, the prelates are the only outstanding thing they have, ######### ### #### in some situations but pretty underwealming and imo an almost out of place unit. Maa with unique upgrades is eh, almost every civ has something for Maa. What other civs also only have bonuses towards one unit type? Here’s one of the most influential empires in history with landskent and Maa with Mace’s and prelates. As much as I’d love them to be significantly more unique Im just advocating for another unique unit, probably a heavy cav considering Otto I made signifgant contributions to the development of heavy cav in the Medieval world, but hey a crossbowmen, siege or something would be fine. Something extra for their military would go a long way.
Every civ in this franchise should feel like a little artistic homage to the historical civ made with love and attention. To me, civ design is an artform. That’s why I get so grouchy about all those generic units.
Back to the original topic, I agree. Malians add another dimension to the game. Full roster of unique units. Love the new civ. I’ll hold off judgment on if it can be balanced until we get info on that. If they balance it, then I would like to see more. #Incas #Meso #undead #okayMaybeDontAddAnUndeadCiv
Malians are without a doubt the most fun civ ingame with most detail and love put in , but ottomans are also cool and WAY too fun to not consider them as a good civ , and fort me its honestly a shame that u guys are calling the civ a copypaste when its truly unique compared to other current civs WE HAD
Wow, that reply must’ve taken a long time to write lol!!
Personally, what does it for me is their units, they have such interesting unit designs and are completely different from the other civs, I like how their Spearmen throws Javelins, how their “M@A” is an anti-armor unit that also uses stealth and how their Scouts can become quite powerful later on!!
I understand the Ottomans wild boar restriction because they are Muslim but Malians are Muslim too so they are not restricted to eat beef, its so weird getting passive food from cows sorry for the word but its like getting food from its dung.
Yes, it took me about an hour to answer everything, but it was worth it xd…
Yes, exactly why we want different civs, because it gives freshness and authenticity to the game, for something it is a historical game RTS in the middle of 2022 no?..
Yes, a little strange the truth, although the same in its defense, according to Ibn Battuta, the Malians were quite lax Muslims with the subject of sharia and Muslim customs, making it clear that they only converted to Islam for economic reasons and not so much for cultural reasons…
Definitely agree! Great design choices, I love that new civ so much.
I also completely get that some civs are “similar” to each other. Its nice to have different approaches with “base” civs such as french and english, and then “unique” civs like mongols and malians. Everyone gets to play what they like and it is awesome ! C:
I mean Milk or something like that hah
There’s milk dude.
Dairy… sweet sweet dairy.
You know cows make milk right? And milk can be used to make cheese, yogurt, etc?

Well this comment aged like sour milk
The way I think of it, every unit in AOE kinda represents a group of units. No way five villager can build a wonder or 20 archers would compose an army. So imagine three cows in a ranch representing like 200 cows in real life. And the ranch workers, who are as visible as the people in the market or blacksmith, breed the cows and kill some off over time like how it works in an actual ranch.
I’d like to see an AoE game where each unit was actually a squad of guys. It would scale up the action and open up the potential for different mechanics like cavalry charges that would blast right through units.
I mean, with asymmetric civs, it’s possible in AOE 4. There’s an old RTS called American Conquest where you can group a bunch of infantry into a formation and once you do, they act as a single unit. So you click one of them and it selects the formation then you control it as a single unit until you disband the formation and they go back to being individual units. I think units get a buff while in formation.
Tell that to Starcraft 2. Two completely different races from each other.
Starcraft 2 has 3 unique matchups.
AoE4 has 45 unique matchups (plus a much larger variety in maps: land, water, hybrid, open, closed, etc… ).
you just said the reason yourself… they have 2 civs, not 10
bueno tiene 3 y warcraft tiene 4 pero completamente unicas
Yeah sure Warcraft 3 has 4 factions. That’s still only 6 unique matchups.
Once again, AoE4 has 45 unique matchups.
The only game I can think of that really compares is AoE3. Even more civs that are also fairly unique. Not sure about how balanced it is though, data is hard to find and the little you can find makes it look like balance is not that tight.
