Map selection in singleplayer lobby does not work properly

The player is unable to select a map without first clicking random, then a map, then back to single.

:play_button: FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

  • 100% of the time / matches I play (ALWAYS)

Here’s the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Go to singleplayer skirmish

  2. Change the map

  3. Observe that you are unable to change the map

  4. Click random

  5. Click any map

  6. then click single

  7. Observe that you are now able to change the map

:backhand_index_pointing_down: What was SUPPOSED to happen if the bug you encountered were not present?

The player is supposed to be able to easily change the map (in multiplayer lobby this works well) without clicking around unnecessarily.

Hi @Hjoerleif

I am not able to reproduce this issue.I can change the map directly when entering to the map menu. Could you disable any active mods and restart the game to see if that fixes the issue?

Please let me know if you still encounter it after disabling mods.

I disabled all mods, verified integrity of game files, and restarted the game. Problem persists. Map change possible, but not without first clicking reset (every single time map selection opens).

Mods: all disabled.
Integrity of game files: successfully validated.
Game: restarted without issues.

Here’s what I do, step by step.

  1. Left-click Single Player - Success
  2. Left-click Skirmish - Success
  3. Left-click map (button to the right of label “Location:” (currently selected: Arabia)) - Success
  4. Left-click Arena - Failure

Attempt to fix 1: re-open map selection…

  1. Exit map selection (left-click “Cancel”) - Success
  2. Re-open map selection (still Arabia, left-click) - Success
  3. Left-click Arabia again - Failure

Attempt to fix 2: reset button…

  1. Left-click Reset - Success
  2. Left-click Arena - Success

Verifying problem is gone and attempting to change map again…

  1. Left-click Arena - Success
  2. Left-click Arabia - Failure

Attempt to fix 3: reboot computer…

Troubleshooting steps completed so far:

  • All mods disabled.
  • Integrity of game files successfully validated with Steam.
  • Game restarted.
  • Computer rebooted.

Problem persists.

I checked the videos you attached, and something seems missing about how the map selection should look.
I am attaching here what the map selection looks like in the game without any mods or modifications

You can see there is a white square behind the map that lights up in green when you hover the mouse over it. In your videos, you are missing that, so there is something wrong with your game files, which is probably causing this issue.

You mentioned that you already verified integrity, so whatever changed your UI/map files is not being recognized by Steam verification. My recommendation is to uninstall the game and install it again. Probably some mod you used in the past modified the files, and it is affecting your map selection now.

I have reinstalled the game today. The problem persists.

Does your map selection screen look like the one I attached? Do the maps highlight in green when you hover over them?

Only after clicking Reset (and then it also works to select map) - meaning I have to click the Reset button before every time I want to change map, otherwise i can’t

This is an issue on your end, but I can´t be sure from here what can be wrong.

I would recommend copying your profile folder to a different directory and deleting the original from the game folder it. Be sure to know where you have the backup of your profile folder (you will restore it after).

The usual location is “C:\Users\username\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE”

After deleting the profile folder, start the game from Steam. The game will generate a new profile folder without any progress. Check if the map selection works normally like that.

I deleted that folder as you suggested.

I started the game and just as you said the folder was regenerated.

But the problem persists, I still can’t select the map easily.
