Map sizes & max-population

With battles like this in the beta, a population limit above 50 has to be a given:

Those pictures don’t prove much. They have just placed a ton of units in the scenario editor. Even in the original AoE you could place hundreds of units for each player on the map completely ignoring the population limit.

We need the gigantic maps in aoe like in ror but also a mapsize between huge and gigantic

Max population should be 200-300. That always worked best for Age of Empires games.

If I remember correctly AOE 1 had a pop cap of 50, so bumping it up to 200 would be nice. And 300 if you allow that much as an extra setting.

When can we download the game?

Look at the forums closer mister, already posts out there. No need to ask in a question post about gameplay and not the game itself

Find it amusing u asked same thing here lol.

They’ve tested age of empires games for larger map sizes. Contrary to what one may believe it is not fun to play with larger maps and populations. They tried it and it makes for bad gameplay. Bigger maps, as we’ve seen on age of empires 2, are incredibly boring. It’s a fun concept to think about and horrible in practice. The map sizes they assign for given player amounts are fine tuned to optimize gameplay experience.

Personally I like the 50 population in single player and the max 200 in multiplayer. It brings some other cool strategic factors to the game which are not present in AOE II, like unit management, and healing. It also makes the priest a way more valuable unit, because it lets you override that amount in a tactical way.

But I like the idea that IF you add larger map sizes (larger than gigantic), the max. population size grows with it proportionally.

well guys i think they will grow up the Pop Limit for sure at least 200 and the map size or i can’t imagine the reason to change the zoom just to play with 50 units on a small map. so dont worry about the pop Limit .

That’s definitely a good point about the scenario editor; I hadn’t considered that. However, I feel like it would be strange to showcase a large amount of units like that in a trailer if you won’t actually be able to do that in a normal game.

Yes, I believe that there should be different options regarding the map size and population capacity. There must be an easier way to manage the large amount of troops. For example if there are 10 units, then they should be allowed to be grouped as one so that things get easier. Also, you should be able to select unlimited amount at the same time, not like AO2 where you can only select less than 200.

More map size options should be a no brainier, but what about more map types?! and Map shapes!? Instead of the standard square, what about a rectangular map that forces you to play horizontally. And dynamic maps, ie. maps that change with the seasons, water freezes during winter months allowing armies to cross etc.

and GATHER POINTS. Anyone who played AOE 1 knows, or should know, quite well, what a pain was to not be able to set gather points for buildings.

I already talked about this in the WE.NEED.GATES thread but… This is AoE:Gold Remastered… Not AoE:1.5, and very much not AoE2… You change how the game works, it brakes balance and changes the game completely.

I do agree we do need gather/way-points though, managing units was and still is hard in Gold.

Having in consideration the fact that in AoE DE we will be able to zoom-out quite a whole lot, should I expect increased map sizes? I’d really like to see beefy maps, the bigger the better!

Bigger maps, More players, more insane gameplay… makes me think that-

And with map size increased, will the max population stay the same? IMO bigger map means more space to build, fight and have tons of fun with.

Exactly, and having more population ca-

I would go absolutely insane if I wouldn’t be able to zoom-out on an battle of epic scale in DE. I’m talking about armies of at least 200 soldiers. A population-cap of 500 should seem rather convenient, but never enough.

Whoa, I think that population cap should be dynamic to the map itself, like lets say you have a HUGE or Insane map size BUT there are Sixteen players on the map, everyone should have default pop cap… BUT lets say its only a 4v4 Team game on a Insane Forest map, players should get double default pop cap because the map can support a large amount of units.

The best of both worlds, would be to let the host pick starting population… Letting people have huge fights on tiny maps, and little fights on world size maps.

Some Ideas…
Make wounded soldiers fight with a handicap (a visible injury would be great). Someone who’s been hit by 3 arrows shouldn’t be at full strength & speed until that last arrow hits. Same with machines (trebuchets, catapults etc.) they should move slower, or maybe only in a circle if a wheel is damaged.

Add more grouping identifiers beyond 1-9.

Have a “huge” map, at least 4 times bigger than the largest in the past and have a complete Globe map (known world at that time). This could have realistic climates per latitude.

Have a high-level position of Farm Manager who would make sure the farms were re-seeded.

Have archer tower gates who could defend.

Have a stand-by garrison able to “auto-respond” to any new attack, upon the notification, they would rush to the point of attack.

Have user-defined coats of arms.

Have “auto-locate” option display a button to jump to the site of a new attack.

I hope that you can setup the pop limit like mods of AoE. If I expect a pop limit i want about 10.000

As for me, I would like to see population limit more than 50  In any case the best solution is to make things like in AoE II: HD. I mean giving a possibility to player to configurate size of map (from small to collossal) and population limit (from 50 to 200).

If you like to see another RTS games with a insane pop limit you can play Stronghold Crusader with battles about 20.000 or more. And the maps are very tiny. :#

+1 about differents map shapes

I used to play a ton of multiplayer AOE 1 throughout the years.

Standard pop limit for games was 200. Of course, you can always exceed the given pop limit by getting close to the limit then producing a lot of army all together.

One thing to remember is how the Timeline in the Achievements is affected when a player’s population exceeds 255… it would show the player as having almost no population (as if the Timeline counter started again as if 256 = 1).

Below is an example of how this looks:
