I’m curious to mod something for AoE2DE (Steam). I read on AoK Heavengames that their modding references are mostly for an old version of the game.
I’m not experienced in modelling, but i have a bit of 3D experience. So i’m curious to try out modding. I wish to make a mounted crossbowman, and make it into a reskin of the heavy cavalry archer.
Thus i imagine i would have to make a new model right?
Does anyone know a good source for a guide how to making a new unit model for AoE2DE? And any other good sources with guides for modding? Thanks in advance.
You don’t have to use models. It can be pixel art. (Although, a lot more tedious/skill required.) Edit: Or even Hand Drawn + Scans + Editing.
There is ‘Blender’ for making models/rendering. (Plenty of tutorials on youtube. Which I briefly watched awhile back.) Although, you may still need things like ‘Gimp’ or ‘Photoshop’. (Even Microsoft ‘Paint’ will work these days. At the bare minimum anyway.)
You will also need ‘SLX Studio’ to create the graphic files/data. As well as ‘Advanced Genie Editor’ (Which is now built in the game’s data in ‘Tools_Builds’.)
edit: Here are some links:
Blender
Gimp
SLX Studio
AGE: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\AoE2DE\Tools_Builds\AdvancedGenieEditor3.exe (Can vary depending on install location.)
Thank you so much!
I have another question, does the file extraction still work like the old way to get into the data-files?
Or does that concern the SLX Studio as you said and the advanced Genie Editor?
I assume you mean the .slp stuff? (graphic stuff.) Those are no longer used. It was replaced with .smx (still used. I prefer it.) and replaced again with *.sld. (Not as user friendly. Not sure if anyone ever decoded its format yet or made a tool for it. Besides the devs.)
edit: I looked into the *.sld format awhile back and found bits and pieces. There are some tools for converting to the new format in ‘Tools_Builds’ as well.
If you mean the game data, I assume AGE has not changed much. (It’s basically the same from what I know of.) Mostly ID’s that are referenced throughout the data mod and attributes. (There has been improvements to it and whatnot though.) You can see the values in AGE though.
Alright thank you very much ^^
