Modding unit graphics

Hello to everyone. New to modding here. I experimented with SLX studio and GIMP (and Microsoft Paint) to change the appearance of buildings. I was wondering if is there any tutorial for changing the appearance of units and basically to create new unit skins? I understand that you can do that with either a 3D modelling tool like Blender or by changing all the different sprites (?) of a unit manually but I am not sure how to proceed in either way. Any help out there? If someone has the know how and can guide me i would be thankful! Thanks a lot!

3d method requires you to learn modeling and texturing, plus animation. It’s more than a job to learn, but you can try.

Sprie modification frame per frame is … Possible, but very long, due to the amount of frames used. Every angle has between 30 and 120 frames, every unit have between 6 and 8 animations that have about 16 angles. So le’ts say, 6x16x60, and you have UHD version doubling total files requirement. It’s really long to do, and you’ll have to deal with shadows, it’s really long and difficult.

The 3d method is the “”“easiest”“”, but having the result looking as good as the game is the hardest part.

If you’re new to 3d, texturing etc, I’d suggest you start with buildings, either on 2d work and 3d work, and once you saw how long it takes, you can decide if you try going further.

There is a lot of good tutorial on the web for 3d learning, while 2d have less tutorial as it’s more how you’ll think about it rather than how to use the tool.
