More Civs With Acces To Steppe Lancers

Franks should get an Heavy lancer unit (Available at Imperial Age), but then again, Spanish and Portuguese should get Genitours aswell, as Genitour is a bastardized version of Jinete, which was a traditional Iberan style of Light Cavalry armed with throwing spear (Zagaya and Jabalina), which was not native to North Africa at all, the Berbers merely adopted it.

But that would make Berbers much less unique, and dumb down one of their core strengths, a mounted skirmisher that only they and their allies get.

You can have a Berber ally as Spanish or Portuguese and you get Genitour. Simple.

Exactly. Meaning that you do not need Hun Steppe Lancers, since you can just get Mongol, Tatars or Cumans allies, and have that guy train SLs for your joint Cavalry horde.

Also, everyone already has Gendarmes, because it literally translates into Mant-at-Arms.

Gent de Armes = Man of Arms (weapons)

Getting them to train their units and training them like mercenary Kipchaks or Genitours is different. No need to be facetious.

wrote this in another post but I love the idea of more steppe lancers for more civs and them getting buffed (again). how about +20hp and -10 food cost? Would it make sense for Magyars to get them with the -15% cost bonus that their scout cavalry get, or give their magyar huszar a +1 range buff as their UU castle age tech? And which civ is going to get the new IMPERIAL steppe lancer!?

Hence the maybe. Besides I donā€™t think Magyars had stepparian origins or had territory overlapping there anyway.

That by itself would give Persians an unique unit thatā€™s no longer unique as Savar are pretty much just stronger Cataphracts (That only regenerate because they are hero units). Other cavalry unique units always offered something different to stand out from standard cavalry units and the Savar would need to change somewhere to also make them unique. Making Steppe Lancer available to Persians on the other hand gives them more variety of cavalry without overlapping with other unique units and adds to historical accuracy. Besides Persians already have HCs and trashbows to deal with infantry.

They did, but the Magyars and Turks in the game, are long detached from their stepparian origins.

maybe Huns or Persians ?

Both of those have good paladins. Persians has Trashbows and Huns has discounted Cav Archers.

None of those need Steppe Lancers, not to mention that Persians are not a Steppe civ, and Huns did not live in the age of the Lancer.

They are not a steppe civ by definition, but their empire did overlap with the steppes as much of their territory included Central Asia. Therefore Persia had parts of their culture including warfare influenced by them.

Play a game with Tatars or Cumans or Mongols as ally. Done.

Only Civ historicly close enough to have Steppe Lancers exept those three, in my opinion are Magyars.

Genitours were used against Berbersā€¦

I know, the Berbers never used Genitours.

They only get them because the devs did not want to make them an Iberian Regional Unit, yet still wanted them in the game.

Genitours in any muslim army make no sense, since the spear they used is literally called Boar Slayer (Jabalina/Javalina), and evolved from a hunting spear.
