Multiplayer Scenarios suck, but they don't have to

Playing custom Scenarios in multiplayer is bad.

  1. You can’t add AIs to empty slots
  2. You can’t enforce civilisations/Major gods
  3. The colour selection doesn’t change the player you play as so you are forced to play as player 1 as host
  4. If you reload a scenario all human slots are suddenly filled with AI
  5. You can’t change the AI personality nor individual difficulty

AoE2DE does this all so much better.
Even AoE3DE does it better but it has some of the same issues.
I haven’t even gotten to test if triggers and stuff actually work with other players in the lobby.

What I want:

  • Option to lock in Major God or just Pantheon
  • Option to make a slot be able to be both human and AI
  • “Both” slots should allow you choosing AI personality and difficulty
  • Changing your colour should mean changing the player, alternatively allow us to move into other slots

This all works really well in AoE2DE.

I really love multiplayer scenarios, they combine the best parts of Single Player and Multiplayer in one.
You can have objectives, stories, scripted events and use campaign exclusive content while also having human interaction, real diplomacy and the general randomness of playing against humans that AI can’t offer.

Fully agree.
This would really improve scenarios.

Being able to add AI into slots is also important for starting scenarios. It was very common in OG and EE AoM to fill slots if you couldn’t find enough players with AI, and often maps would automatically adjust in the case of RPGs, or not matter in the case of maps like settlers.

The current implementation of being able to lock slots to AI as a map creator is good in that players hosting the map can’t accidentally break the map by putting humans in AI slots, but we need to be able to put AI in human slots.

The current trend of everyone having to create multiple versions of the same map to accommodate different player counts is annoying and bloats the mod manager. And isn’t really a feasible solution for very detailed maps like RPGs.

I’m pretty sure they will give us a fix for the slot number soon but I also hope they make player selection and enforcing Major Gods work like in AoE2.

Though there is a work around for the 2nd issue since you can simply change the civilisation via Trigger.
