I come here to present my proposal for adjustments to the names of the civs to homogenize them. We have names of countries, demonyms, strange things… a variety that feels weird when looking at the complete list. I propose that all civs have proper names like the Abbasid Dynasty or the Delhi Sultanate. Here is the list:
- French → France - English → England - Holy Roman Empire → Holy Roman Empire - Abbasid Dynasty → Abbasid Dynasty - Byzantines → Byzantine Empire - Chinese → China or Imperial China - Delhi Sultanate → Delhi Sultanate - Japanese → Japan - Mongols → Mongol Empire - Malians → Mali - Ottomans → Ottoman Sultanate - Rus → Kievan Rus’
In addition, I would also like to see changes in the civ variants… like everyone else. I propose keeping the concepts, because they are good and liked, but the names or factions they represent… I think they don’t quite fit.
- Ayyubids → Ayyubid Dynasty. It’s fine, only change the name to fits with other civs. - Jeanne d’Arc → Jeanne’s Army. This one also seems good to me, although it seems strange… I would have liked to see more the Carolingian Empire variant… but Jeanne is fun. - Order of the Dragon → Teutonic Order. Here they have really missed the opportunity to show an Order that did have real influence and power… - Zhu Xi’s Legacy → Ten Kingdoms. Perhaps the most controversial name. I think they could solve it by including this period in Chinese history. The Five Dynasties are the ones missing from those that appear in the classic Chinese civ. The names of their dynasties would also have to be changed to ones consistent with this period such as Later Liang or Later Jin.
What do you think? Would you change anything about my proposal? Can they listen to us and make these changes?
Since Zhu Xi’s legacy is focused about Chinese philosophy I would change the Dynasty system (yuan, song, etc…) and change the name to philosophies so that it could fit with the factions name so if you build two landmarks instead of Yuan dynasty you’ll get confusionism, taoism, Buddhism etc…
So now the faction will represent China’s vast history and influence in philosophy and the name of Zhu Xi’s legacy can feel appropriate now.
I think the relic will not to change the name of the civilization, but there may be some players willing to create mods to change the name of the civilization.
As I understand ALL civ names are actually shortenings (demonyms) of the Kingdom, Kingdoms, Sultanates or Dynasties they represent, mainly so that they are not “Too Long”, in the Civ selection list.
As it is something already established, I don’t think it should change, unless it is a name that is not understood (LIke Sultan Army¿Which Sultan? The Bahmani or Morocco Sultan Army? Many Sultanates to refer to only one). There is what I believe is the transition of the real name and the demonyms:
- Kingdom of French → French - Kingdom of England → English - Holy Roman Empire → Holy Roman Empire - Abbasid Dynasty & Abbasid Caliphate → Abbasid Dynasty - Eastern Roman Empire → Byzantine Empire (Arqueological name) → Byzantines - Chinese Medieval Dynasties → China - Delhi Sultanate & Ghurid Dinasty → Delhi Sultanate(To represent the 5 dynasties of Delhi Sultanates) - Japanese Medieval Shogunates & Heian period → Japaneses - Mongol Empire → Mongols - Mali Empire → Malians - Ottomans Sultanate → Ottomans - Kievan Rus, Rus Principalities & Rus Zarate → Rus’ (This was the longest one that required shortening)
Even the civ variants are shortenings/demonyms:
- Ayyubid Dinasty → Ayyubids (Ayyubid is enough to specify which dynasty it refers to) - Jeanne d’Arc Army→ Jeanne d’Arc. - Order of the Dragon Army→ Order of the Dragon - Chinese Zhu Xi’s Legacy → Zhu Xi’s Legacy(Because is the influence of ZX in China, not Corea or other)
In the future, if they add Civs such as Crown of Castile, Crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of Portugal, perhaps they will also put: “Castile”, “Aragon”, “Portugal”, because they are indistinguishable and one understands what they mean.
