It’s kind of crazy — those single-player players seem more or less happy with the current state of the game, and I assume with the latest DLC as well. Yet they’re the same ones leaving negative Steam reviews about the new campaigns DLC (which I haven’t had time to play yet). We live in a strange world.
Surprised with TMR’s reviews too, it’s still a good DLC compared to 3K and it’s still sitting in mixed rather than positive.
I think it’s because of the fact it’s only two civs despite costing as much Doi used to and a much lesser fact which is that the Armenians were completely butchered historical wise in their tech tree.
Otherwise as an answer to the thread generally, I don’t mind the influx of new DLC. I’d rather they keep releasing new content on a half yearly basis as they always have, though I think game modes like RoR and Chronicles should’ve been their own thing.
I also do want to point out that OP is being very disingenuous with their charts for active players on stream. Especially since the game hit a new peak late last year during the holidays, most players for this game are single player enjoyers, this includes myself, and more single player content especially Civs will make said players active when they have free time like on the holidays.
I have more radical views on this, since I believe the eSports scene for this game was a mistake, since it gave too much people who care more about the moment to moment gameplay rather than the historical and storytelling potential of this game. I’d even go as far as to say pro players are just tourists who are in this just for the money and because they enjoy the gameplay.
I wonder if it’s too late to switch tracks and move the game down the Stacraft 2 path: stop making civs that are supposed to fit both SP and MP. Maybe stop adding civs to the MP altogether. Just keep balancing those already included, while adding new content to SP.
They tried: Rome. Didnt work that weel
What? Make the game more beginner-friendly? Improve the game’s quality of life to enhance the experience for beginner players?
Fix the game’s eternal bugs? Prevent my army from getting stuck in trees? Make villagers build structures smarter? Prevent villagers from getting stuck or standing still near resources while collecting them? Prevent villagers from spinning in circles and wasting time? Make my merchant stop wandering around the middle of the map? Improve the game? Sorry, from what I’ve seen, the game can’t be improved. Why can’t it be better? I don’t know why…
AoE2 is beautiful… I already said that…
Add more civilizations to the game…
The more civilizations, the better. It would be great to reach 100 or even 200 civilizations…
AoE2 De De in 2029…2032…2040…2050…
Buy non-stop… AoE2 today, AoE2 until 2050…
AoE2 is beautiful…
We’ll keep buying Age of Empires 2 until 2050, Civilizations, but Civilizations…
Buy more…
AoE2 is a work of art…
The technical level of AoE2 is incredible…
Repositioning is fundamental for excellent APM… After all, my villagers and my army like to see my clicks, and that’s why they’re constantly in the wrong place…
Go back to AOE4. Its pretty clear already that you moved on fro m2 to 4. Go have fun and stop annoying the others who still rather play AOE2…
The game is in good shape right now, however the client is becoming and All-Cluttered Frankestein Monster with 60 Civs, Antiquity Stuff, Heroes, Legendary Campaigns instead of Historical and so… Loosing its identity while becoming harder for players to learn and devs to balance.
A complete Mess!
A veteran player of the franchise pondered:
“Would changing the game’s graphics engine solve these problems?” After all, why do these problems persist? Will we have to buy AoE2 again to fix them?
The professional player, thinking:
“What nonsense, it would be better to add more civilizations to maintain interest in the game; after all, people want more civilizations, and that’s how tournaments are funded…” I keep dodging arrows and I’m good at it… haha
What everyone thinks:
EVERYONE WANTS THE GAME TO IMPROVE AND SOLVE THE PROBLEMS, WE ALL LIKE TO WATCH THE TOURNAMENTS…
but it’s a fact that priorities are different…
Buy until you reach 100 civilizations…
Now I’m going to put an end to all these discussions that I’ve been spreading across various topics, and I even created topics on the same subject…
I did this in those topics to prove here, to everyone, that AoE2 isn’t going to change, it’s going to continue with the same problems, and I say, many fans don’t care, there are few who really want these changes…
In fact, it’s not a priority for the developers to make the game evolve, after all, WE ALL KEEP BUYING MORE AND MORE CONTENT, DLCs AND CIVILIZATIONS NON-STOP…
There’s no reason to change…
I’ll continue, you’ll continue, and everyone will continue in the war of useless clicks repositioning villagers and soldiers non-stop in a war against villagers who are standing still, wandering or spinning…
It’s useless, people don’t see it as a priority, they don’t want changes at this level… The developers have already understood the key to AoE2’s success. It’s about having more and more content…
So that’s it, I’m going to end this discussion I’ve been having in the topics here, sorry to bother you. Guys…
After 3 versions of the same game, I wanted this development error related to the path of military units or villagers, which is very old, to be corrected, but it won’t be possible because it might be necessary to change the game engine technology, I think…
AoE 2 is an amazing game and the DLCs are good, they add content and new mechanics, I like that…

We multiplayer aoe gamers have nothing to object against more camapigns, just put em in chronicles. Just don’t stuff all this crap into PVP. In singleplayer games make bonkers stuff as much as u like. Than we both can enjoy the game.
Check sc2 it has 3 times more units in single player campaigns and alot more modifications.
After a… sudden urge to play something about a war involving Persians, I’ve finally tried Battle for Greece. And it’s great! Almost exactly what I want from AOE2. Strong narrative, well made missions, plenty of diverse campaign-exclusive units etc. The generic look fitting enough to keep things immersive, although I am spoiled by the Alexander game from 2004 and would like for Greeks and Persians to look completely different. Still, this is fine as is, although I’ll withold final judgment until I see Puru in action for myself.
So, I feel like Chronicles is a great way to move forward for the game without having to bother the MP crowd with new civs, rebalancing etc.
