New Civ Concept Kingdom of Castille (Medeval Spain)

The Kingdom of Castille represent pre reconquista medeval spain.

  • Year span 1065 - 1535
  • Focus: Cavalry, Offence, Pastoral Economy
  • Difficulty: 1/3

Bonuses:

  • Frontier Settlements: outposts, town centers, and keeps provide a 10% gathering boost to villagers in range
  • Cabalgadas (historically meant cavalry raids): Gets gold from killing enemy villagers and town centers
  • Atalayas (unique outpost) count as a universal resource drop off point but cost 50 extra wood and can recruit dogs
  • Has access to both the sheepfold (in a limited capacity) and farms

Unique Units:

  • Spanish Tercio (Pikemen): An age 4 spearman-like unit that has bonus vs cavalry but boasts longer reach (3 times reach) and absorbs 25% of incoming damage from nearby allies (up to 3 tiles away) and spreads it out across all pikemen within range.
  • Almogávar: A unique ranged infantry replacing spearmen that throws javelins countering cavalry at range and in melee with a spear. Available at the barracks and the range. (These same guys form the Catalan company later!
  • Jinete: Fast light cavalry armed with throwing javelins and a lightweight lance. Historically used to counter light cavalry and light infantry. Counters light units at range doing +8vs light (and +8 vs villagers if they do not count as light). Has a melee and ranged mode. In melee they deal less damage than a horseman but have a higher bonus vs light giving them the same damage against light troops
  • Mounted crossbowmen: Used extensively across the Iberian peninsula these units counter armour at range but cannot reload while moving.
  • Dogs: a high hp no armour unit available from the dark age for 90 food and recruitable from Atalayas. Does double damage within the radius of town centers, keeps and outposts (to represent loyalty to masters :service_dog: ). Has “lick their wounds” ability that lets them heal 1 per second if idle in radius around tc, outpost, and castle and 2 per second if garrisoned. In age 4 after war dogs upgrade it does the double damage near enemy fortifications too.:dog:

Unique Technologies:

  • Andulazian Breed Horses: Increases the speed of cavalry by 10%
  • Garrocha Training: Increases the damage of knights charge attack by 25%
  • Broadhead Azagayas: Increases the ranged damage of Jinetes by +2
  • RepoblaciĂłn Charters: reduces the resource cost of town centers and houses by 30% wood
  • Escaupiles: Adds cotton armour padding to dogs giving them +2 armour
  • Perros de Traba: Gives dogs a deadly trap effect that slows enemies bit by 25%

Landmarks:

  • Age 1- Age 2
    • Alcázar of Segovia: Acts as a fortified outpost with 10 slots that also functions as a universal resource drop-off point. Unlike the regular outpost also hosts all the upgrades for the different resource gathering. Also can recruit wardogs :dog: .
    • Burgos Wool Market: Spawns a small flock of sheep when built and slowly spawns more after
  • Age 2- Age 3
    • Maestrazgo Academy: Grants unique technologies
      • Hardened Leather Adargas: grants Almogávars and Jinetes increased ranged armor by 2
      • Frontier Encomiendas: Allows outposts to be constructed 50% faster and -20% wood cost
      • Toledo Steel Forging: increases the melee attack of all troops by +2
    • Cathedral of Santiage: Grants clĂ©rigos (unique monk with faster walk speed) the ability to increase the speed of military units within a 6 tile range by 15%. Also trains them at 20% faster speed.
  • Age 3- Age 4
    • The Alcázar of Toledo: Acts as a heavily fortified keep that can train unique Castillian units in batches of 3.
    • The University of Salamanca: It functions as a University with a 100% faster research rate for all technologies and reduce economic building construction time by 25%.. Additionally, it unlocks unique global upgrades called “Scholastic Charters,” which permanently increase villager gathering rates for Food, Wood, and Gold by 8%

I like it… I would add the Adelantado as a scout unit, the Missionary as a mounted monk, the Conquistador and the War Dog…

War dogs would be cool. In the Kingdom of Aragon 1270 there is a record of 30 men at arms, 1 beast of burden and 2 wardogs in a garrison. It is unknown the extent to which dogs were used at this time period, but is likely they were mostly used defensively around towns and fortifications, keeping watch and loyally defending their masters.

In game this could translate to 3 capacity per town center and keep. Could get a 100% damage boost while around town centers and keeps, and outposts to encourage defensive use of them.

Unit stats ideas: base hp 90, no armour, 6 attack, 1.25 attack speed, around movement 1.55 speed. Start as dog unit in age 2 and can be promoted to guard dog and later wardog status in higher ages . Not sure what final age upgrades they might have.

Edit: Also get a “lick their wounds” ability that lets them heal while sitting passively around tc, outpost, keep, or garrisoned. Maybe around 1 hp per seconds or something

Sadly these do not fit the timeframe I listed. There can always be a variant civ later with the reconquista time period for the Missionary and the Conquistador as well as some other troops I didn’t include (rodeleros for example).

I love the sound of this! Yes, and they would be recruitable from outpost and tc.

I would say give them 2 hp per second while garrisoned because they cannot fire arrows like conventional troops. Yes, this sounds like a good mechanic. :pinched_fingers:

Yes, also…it can be a Spanish civilization and then have its Castilian and Aragonese variants…

Yes, I was saying that the Adelantado should train it so that it could be used to scout the map…

There is some historical presidence for the unique scout you mentioned. They would be like warrior scout but with more armour and less damage. Training wardogs makes sense but the Adelantado would feel redundant in terms of role with the wardog unless the wardog was mainly a defensive unit early game rather than a villager killer. Perhaps they could provide the double attack within range of Adelantado as a tech, not just TC’s, outpost and castles.

Yes, it’s a matter of working a little…

Yeah . . . its a cool idea but I just image people putting this guy (Adelantado) behind someone’s base by their gold vein and just recruiting dogs until they give up . . . and at like less than the 2 minute mark, that is unless you build an outpost on your gold vein which would be a must every game against Spanish. If they don’t build dogs then you just wasted 100 wood on outpost, but you have to just in case.

Yeah l, that’s what I was picturing too. They don’t need the unique scout anyway since they already have more unique units than most civs.
