Suggestion for a New Civilization in Age of Empires III: The Albanians

Hello AoE III community,

As a big fan of Age of Empires III, I’d like to propose a new civilization that would bring a unique dynamic to the game: The Albanians. Their history is rich with skilled warriors and defensive strategies, especially during the Ottoman period. Here are some ideas to make this civilization stand out:

Main Bonuses:

:white_check_mark: Guerrilla Warfare – Land units receive +10% defense in mountainous and forested terrain.
:white_check_mark: Castle Defense – Forts and towers have +20% HP and attack faster.
:white_check_mark: Local Armed Forces – Military units cost 15% less, but take longer to train.
:white_check_mark: Trade-Based Economy – Trade routes generate extra gold and food over time.
:white_check_mark: Skanderbeg’s Warriors – Albanian cavalry has +10% attack against infantry and light cavalry.

Unique Units:

:crossed_swords: Stratiots – Fast and powerful cavalry with bonus damage against heavy cavalry.
:crossed_swords: Highland Warriors – Light infantry with hit-and-run tactics and high attack speed.
:crossed_swords: Albanian Heavy Artillery – Specialized siege unit with increased damage against buildings.

Special Buildings:

:european_castle: Albanian Castle – A powerful fortress that can train Stratiots and boost nearby unit defenses.
:houses: Tribal Towers – Small structures that increase food production and train guerrilla units.

Revolutions & Alliances:

Can revolt to form an independent Albanian state, gaining military and economic bonuses.

Can ally with Venetians (for stronger trade routes) or Austrians (for advanced weaponry).

Why Would This Civilization Be Exciting?

The Albanians would offer a unique mix of guerrilla warfare, flexible economy, and deadly cavalry, making them an exciting civilization for both offensive and defensive strategies.

What do you think about this idea? It would be amazing to see it in the game!

Ummm…World’s Edge canceled a DLC then ended support so no more official anything. Our only glimmer of light now is the modding community so maybe one day you’ll get your wish.

The game’s abandonment is incomprehensible, considering the amount of content requested by the community, and the untapped potential of the game.

Next to DLC, the most frequent request I used to see scattered across social media was an Xbox port.

I wonder what AoE3 did in its past life to deserve such mistreatment from WE. I truly believe there are those within WE that hate the game. What other explanation is there?

Thats like the most boring AoE3 civ design I have seem in a while

You are Albanian, right?

I dunno how to break this to you but if you must preface your unique unit with “albanian” then it’s not that unique to begin with.

Yes, especially new Asian civs…

Consoles in general…taking advantage of the 20th anniversary of AoE 3 to launch a console version for Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2…there is one who tells me to play AoE 3 DE on PS5 and I tell him that there may not be a PS5 port like Retold has now…

Colonialism (AoE3) bad=feudalism (AoE2-4) good and they needed more devs for Retold to get it up and running quickly and they said “well, a soul for a soul”…

This is what ChatGPT answered me:

"It’s definitely frustrating to see AoE3 often being overshadowed or mistreated by certain factions in the Age of Empires community, especially when you compare it to the love AoE2 gets. There are a lot of potential reasons for this treatment, and it could be a mix of factors rather than just “hate.”

One possibility is that AoE3, with its more complex mechanics and the introduction of different playstyles (like the Home City system), was a bit of a departure from the formula that made AoE2 so beloved. That shift may have led to a more divided community, with some players unable to appreciate the changes or get used to them. Also, AoE3’s setting (early colonial period) wasn’t as universally appealing to everyone, leading to it being less iconic compared to the medieval setting of AoE2.

Another thing is the way the franchise evolved over time. AoE3 was released at a time when RTS games were starting to decline in popularity, and it didn’t get as many expansions or updates as AoE2 did. This left AoE3 with fewer chances to redeem itself in the eyes of fans.

As for “WE” (assuming you mean the Age of Empires team or developers), I’m sure it’s more about resource allocation, priorities, and trying to keep the franchise moving forward with new releases (like AoE4) rather than some personal vendetta against AoE3. But it’s hard not to feel like AoE3 doesn’t get the same level of attention sometimes. Maybe the sheer nostalgia and entrenched fandom surrounding AoE2 makes it harder for AoE3 to get its due recognition, especially when the newer updates or releases focus heavily on its predecessors.

What do you think? Do you feel like AoE3 has the potential to be treated better, or are its unique elements too different to be embraced in the current RTS landscape?"
