Answering the original question:

If we consider how the increase of civilizations happens for the new installments of the franchise (AoeII DE, AoeIII DE, AoeI Rise of Rome):

  • Assuming that we follow a pattern, and that curiously every year Age III DE as well as Age II DE releases a new DLC with new Civs.
  • If we consider that the previous year AoeIV released two new Civs: Ottomans and Mali in October 2022, together with the new season 3.
  • And considering that AoeIV was released incomplete in 2021, with the Editor only available 6 months after the game came out, the game is actually less than 1 year and 4 months old of a actual complete release.

This being the case, the most probable thing, considering that 1 year has passed, is that there are new Civs for October. If not, there will probably be new unique units and balance issues. Considering Civs that have fewer unique units, maybe the HREā€™s turn (only 2) will come.

For other installments in the franchise, recently even AoeI has had the Vietnamese added in AoeI Rise of Rome, as AoeII DLC. For the Aoe3, it is expected that two new civs will also come out at the end of the year, due to a leak that apparently is on purpose by the developers themselves. At the moment there is no more information, which is good because then the company has good measures to avoid filters or espionage, but yes, it leaves us wanting.

I could say what else I hope for but I think that would be changing the subject, here I will only mention the possibilities of new civs coming out or not, and what are the chances. About what Civs would want, there are other issues.

As other comments said, we will have to wait until the end of August to see if they dare to reveal something new at the conference, although I doubt it, they will probably only give us a teaser, since between the end of October and August there are 3 whole months. The one I have the most hope of announcing something would be the Mythology Retold.

Yes, I think the sameā€¦ two civs for AoE 3 and AoE 4, a rework for HRE (with new UUs) and maybe show images and gameplay for Retold in order to launch it between October and Decemberā€¦ and for AoE 2 and RoR the original campaigns of 1 DE (Egypt, Greece, Babylon and Carthage)ā€¦so everyone is happy and contentā€¦

Yes itā€™s a bit worrisome that we still have no new roadmap or any news of whatā€™s to come in the future for AoEIV, but do we really think that Microsoft would just pull the plug so easiliy on one of their most famous franchises they got?

It has to count for something, AoEIV has just scratched the surface of itā€™s full potential and I want to believe that Microsoft sees that too. Iā€™m hoping to see at least two new civilizations at this years Gamescon as well as new campaign or other content for this game. Expansion pack or DLC Iā€™m in for that

I understand that the Gamescom previews are out with no mention of AoE4 at all. This isnā€™t all that surprising given what we have seen in recent months. At any rate, even if we took this news to suspect that AoE4 is no longer in development, I would hesitate to equate that with Microsoft pulling the plug on the entire franchise.

AoE4 is just the next game in the franchise and not the franchise itself. There will be more games.

Did they mention AoEIV in last years preview for Gamescom? I just think that either Microsoft or Relic would had said something by now if AoEIV was dead and no more development would be happening right?

iā€™ll give you a simple answer, with number this game is pulling, compared to like majority they have, they ainā€™t gonna pull the plug, cuz if they did, theyā€™d pull it on all aoe games using that logic, and since age of empires as IP basically made microsoft relevant in gaming in the first place, they probably know they shouldnā€™t either
if someone even just briefly knows about gaming side of microsoft, theyā€™d almost certainly recognize the age of empires main theme (the what we call main menu music) even if they wouldnā€™t be sure which game its from

Not sure about that, new Halo infinite went to hell, when I played that game it has a huge amount of players but only 2 maps, people got bored and now it barely has any players, but you will find a huge store in Halo with a lot of skins, so if they donā€™t care/understand their fan base of halo probably for age IV will be the same.

I understand that yes, they did mention AoE4 in the same materials from last year.

If major development of the game (like new civs) actually was over, this kind of vagueness and silence is exactly what we would expect it to look like. I was here in 2012 and 2016 when AoEO and AoE: Castle Siege closed. This is exactly how it played out.

honestly comparing WE and relics handling of aoe4 to how 343 handled halo so far is comparing SCII to DOWIII (no offense gorb), its not even close

Well DOWlll was made by relicā€¦

this is a valid outlook tho, i do recall the aoe online situation but even there ongoing development being shut down was communicated eventually

not important or relevant to the comparison above, as iā€™m not trying to attack DOWIII, we know how that went down, used it as example of poor handling vs example of excellent handling, hence SCII being used
ik you get it, just clarifying for anyone that wouldnā€™t
my idea is, even aoe4ā€™s handling by relic and WE is leagues above 343ā€™s handling of halo, even if we perceive it as bad (keep in mind weā€™re spoiled with excellent handling on 2 and 3 DEs so that influences our takes)

Iā€™d really start to worry if we hear nothing at Gamescom or anything prior or after it and going silent the remaining year.

I still have hopes that we get some news or clarity at least this month.

It seems to me a daring speculation knowing that it is still the second most relevant game in the franchise for now.

We will have to wait for the event to see what they tell us.

Studios also tend to get silent when theyā€™re working on stuff. Iā€™m not at all convinced AoEIV wonā€™t have at least a few proper DLCs. The game is doing just fine. Understandable people would be paranoid given what happened at Relic and the communication has been lackluster but thatā€™s been a WE problem. Microsoft isnā€™t going to give up on AoEIV this quickly.

Having lived through it twice in this franchise, I know all too well that watching a beloved game get canceled is heartbreaking.

I hope for the playersā€™ sake that if we truly are watching it that the franchise announce it.

I am definitely speculating. Thatā€™s what we all do around here. We make predictions based on the best available evidence.

AoEO closed in 2014 and Castle Siege in 2019ā€¦a sadness gripped meā€¦
