New DLC - The Viking Sagas

Thoughts on Saxons having the strongest Longships in the game? I don’t even think they should have access to Longships. That makes you think they were vikings and not enemies of the vikings. Am I wrong?

I have a feeling Saxons will be very OP.

Mayans Arb + Byzantines Skirm + Goths+Malians Champion, they have some versatile late game option. And even in Castle Age, have all FU units.

That’s a huge exaggeration. They seem more similar to Koreans to me. An archer civ with tower bonuses for defense. Koreans have a bigger discount on archers too and they also have free armor upgrades. I love the Saxon design because I love the Koreans. But I don’t think they will be OP on Arabia at all.

Vikings on the other hand might become really good now depending on how good the Varangian Guard unit is. What they’ve been sorely missing until now is a raiding unit.

I just wonder if the Vikings will lose their free Hand Cart and free Wheelbarrow bonuses in exchange for something different in this incoming rework

This can never happen, it’s the main feature of current Vikings.

The forums would burn and crash :joy:

We are getting a major patch with the DLC, that changes vikings and adds new RUs. But still secretly hope it will add at least some cosmetic changes, like the one with monks and castles. Seemingly not, but one can dream.

Heey, it just occured to me - we are getting a Norse DLC, right? So, any chance we are seeing more of those Norse Warriors?

I’ll still say Vikings discount with extra attack and movement speed is stronger.

Yes, in the campaign (they are shown in several screenshots) and more custom scenarios - probably not outside of that.

They could be reworked into a second Viking UU but I think it’s unlikely.

I plan to use them as “Lething Axemen” (in a modified version) in my Valdemar campaign (if I ever get around to finishing it).

Well Jomsvikings are now with the Danes. Swedes are the Varangians. The Frisian Vikings belong with the Saxons. There is still Baltic Vikings left.

There is still the Norse, Iceland, Faroer islands, Finnish (don’t shoot me for naming the Fins), Normans.
And if you consider the new Saxons as the Islandic Saxons then we still have Continental Saxons left.

Both.

  • The Anglo-Saxons that went to England during the fall of Rome era is when they were a-viking. Then they settled, the expansion just adds their evolved version in the Isles.
  • There were also the Frisian Tribes, they are a subgroup within the Saxons. They were viking raiders in the early medieval times.
  • In the middle medieval age the Saxons were mostly known as mercenaries for dutch, belgian and german duchies fighting among themselves.

They probably have high pierce armor, but why are they specifically weak against cavalry?

And no Varangians deep dive today, probably…

That is the general description of any generic infantry unit

high pierce armour and the melee range (Charge) attack are the reasons for it. And it’s weak against cavalry For balancing reasons, having a unit that’s good against ranged and cavalry seems broken.

Ranged and infantry is more dire because there are 7 civs that will flounder if its anti infantry and good vs archers

More like the other way round. Cavalry normally struggles more with breaking through infantry, and infantry struggle catching archers.

This guy sounds like he throws a skirmisher javelin to make him good vs archers.

High pierce armor and low melee armor (maybe), the javelin attack could have either some melee attack or bonus against archers

My question is more about which historical figures and events are left to the Vikings?

The only ones I can think of right now are the establishment of Normandy (Rollo) and the settlements in Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland (Erik the Red).

Although it’s not perfect, perhaps the Finns could be covered by the Lithuanians, who are also Baltic people.
The Normans are a bit trickier. Before the establishment of Normandy, they were just Vikings, and then they became Franks. Those who went south and conquered Sicily became Sicilians, while those who went north and conquered the Saxons became Britons.

We have Vinlandsaga in Historical Battles and Karlsefni in V&V covering some of these. Rollo would be cool though. Maybe a more typical but long build&destroy scenario for him like the Xie An the Chinese got, to differentiate it from unorthodoxy of existing Viking scenarios?

To my knowledge, the Finns never fielded cavalry on par with the Leiciai or Winged Hussars, they were more of a hit-and-run warriors (so Halbs and Skirms civ).

My solution for Normans is to rename the Sicilians (accompanied ofc by an architecture & voicelines change) and give them the current Teuton castle (which is modelled not on anything German, but on a Norman gatehouse in Britain). The existing Sicilian Castle&Wonder assets and the Voicelines would then by recycled by a proper Sicilian civ that takes more from the island’s history than just the Normans.

Yeah. Should have said Wu+ eco + Byzantines spear, skirm + Maya archer, Goths+Malians+Teutons Champions.
