New DLC - The Viking Sagas

Can anyone list all the Flora & Fauna we have found so far? Is there Reindeer?

One petty quip then i’ll be done complaining about the campaign: The DLC should be called The Viking Saga (singular) because there’s only one story lol.

I wonder if this DLC will come out on September 27th, the 27th anniversary of the game. That also happens to be my 25th birthday, and I am of Norwegian descent, so it would be quite the cool present!

By that logic, i’m hoping that the DLC to finish the Slav split (renaming the Slavs civ to Ruthenians or Rus and adding Vlachs (I know not Slavic but Balkan), Serbs, and maybe another south Slavic civ or maybe Albanians comes next summer lol

Byzantines should get the Varangian Guards. It won’t ruin them. It will improve their in-game representation.

Currently, AOE4 has the best representation of Byzantines. They even speak Greek!

I’d prefer an African DLC first, but new arch sets are always cool. That said, the more they add the dumber it is that they refuse to add a more Sinitic set for the East Asian civs (current set only really fits the Japanese).

I hope the moose is a boar-like huntable, otherwise they’d make no sense.

I’ve been waiting for a Balkans DLC for two years now. I really hope they get rid of that pseudo-civilization, the Slavs, once and for all and add the Kievan Rus’ instead; logically, they would also include the Wallachians, Croatia, and perhaps the Serbs. I hope the developers are seriously considering it.

Y’know, I wonder if driftwood would make sense as a source of wood.

It would be cool if the editor had units to represent Finns and Canada natives.

The fact we can’t seem to go a year without an Euro DLC really bothers me tbh

I’d be a lot more excited about this one if we got an African DLC first

We all have our preferences but this is much better than 3k in my view.

I think that would definitely be a really welcome move

Of course half of the posts under every DLC announcement are people complaining about not getting their whislist of civilisations. Every DLC is instantly compared to their dream DLC and therefor awful.

Just that the dream DLC of everyone is completely different and sometimes people want the literal opposites. The developers are not there to make a DLC for one person specifically but for everyone. They have to balance different interests. Some people want to see all old civilisations completely reworked while others don’t want them to be touched at all. Some want civilisations with many unique units others just one. Some people are only interested in European DLC while others hate how European centric the game is.

Even some people the AoE3 community were complaining that the devs were not adding the civilisations they wanted instead of being happy that the game is getting new content after 5 years of nothing again.

They will keep the “Vikings” because the original base game civilisations and their unique units are sacred and can’t be renamed.

•Varangian Guards — deadly shock infantry who generate gold while fighting and excel at raiding and melee combat.

They are listed as regional unit. They make no sense for Danes, Vikings or Saxons so they will likely be only shared with the Byzantines.

The German translation between promotional material, Achievements, actual unit names ingame and even unit descriptions is not consistent. Their UU is called “Huscarl” on the Steam page, which is pretty ironic if you think about it.

It doesn’t say “new unique units” just unique “units across those new civilisations”.

I think the Mounted Crossbow will only be available to the Saxons and not to the Danes, Vikings or Varangians. They look a lot more like a Western European regional unit to me.

They are probably afraid of splitting the player base into different version.

Though I doubt that more then 5% of players would be playing on an older version so I don’t think it would be an issue. I think they likely just don’t want to put in the effort. The main issue is that the AoE2 Dataset also holds some graphical information like how many sprites per angle of animation, so changing the unit animations also brakes old datasets. And they don’t want to have to update many different old datasets every time they change unit sprites.

This is how I interpret it:

Vikings=Norwegians

Varangians=Swedish

Danes and Saxons are obvious who they are.

Civ choices are like Burgundians/Sicilians. So it is better than 3 Kingdoms and Return of Rome, but worse than every other DLC. I also hate how the campaigns are based on one story. I really like the new architecture set, it was long overdue for Vikings.

I want a Balkan DLC. But when the Last Chieftains was released I was still happy. I was not happy with the 3Kingdoms DLC.

With this one, my initial reaction was disappointment, but I am warming up to it because at the end of the day it does not seem as lazy or out of place as the 3K DLC which did not even add a Chinese architecture set and as we learned the past week, it was watered down by clueless lawyers.

And I am also hoping for Varangian Guards for Byzantines.

Exactly as I feel.

The Last Chieftains is a better DLC than 3 Kingdoms and now we’re back to the splitslop all over again where the lesson wasn’t learned…

As much as I want Africa, the better choice for a European DLC would’ve been Balkans almost as LoTD, DoTD and Mountain Royals added campaigns for AoK civs that never got one before.
