Hello everyone! I have just spent around 150 hours making a Spirit of the Law video on the megarandom map.
The megarandom map is (for those that don’t know) often featured in ranked rotation and is a pretty fun & interesting map to play. This video is about 15 minutes long and is concisely packed with tons of useful information!
Since I spent lots of time on this, I would appreciate your feedback! If you liked it, please like and share so that other people can see it!
He probably didn’t, which opens up massive ethical concerns. Honestly, this kind of thing is why I’m against AI, in addition to changing the landscape of professional art forever.
I did it just to verify that it’s AI by listening to the beginning, and then the second time, I replied to someone who might’ve thought it was real by making a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine reference.
This line:
(Incidentally, that moment in question was all about faking a Dominion recorded meeting about an attack on the Romulans, so it’s more appropriate than I realized.)
I have already informed him. He hasn’t replied in some time; most likely he hasn’t checked his email, considering that he has replied to me before and we have had good faith dialogue.
Also, I created all of the content myself; including all scripting and all data. None of this is AI generated. So in terms of destroying art, I agree that art such as illustrations and texts are ruined by ai, but this is another matter.
Okay, but did you contact him for permission BEFORE making the video? If not, there are massive ethical concerns here.
What I mean is, you used AI for faking Spirit’s voice, which, without his permission, is a massive invasion of privacy, so I sincerely hope you did get his permission.
I was trying not to jump to conclusions, although I don’t find his reply to you at all reassuring.
I take it by “this”, you mean the script and data, but the voice is AI generated.
If so, I’m afraid that I can only disapprove of this, unless you can demonstrate either that Spirit of the Law gave his explicit permission, or that the videos of his that you used have an appropriate license (CC BY or similar), or argue convincingly that this constitutes fair use.
I appreciate that you put a lot of time and effort into making this, but to me that doesn’t make it any less problematic.
Yeah, this is odd. Parody is allowable under fair use, but there’s no humor or anything else here that makes this parody. From my perspective it’s just extremely offputting to make a video acting like you’re SoTL, whether or not you explicitly acknowledge that it’s fake (which most will figure out anyway). Use of AI voice may be kind of a gray area, but whether or not it’s technically allowable, I think it goes very much against, well, the Spirit of the Law, to copy something so personal from another creator (again, without it being parody). I can understand having this idea as a shower thought, but I don’t understand it making it past that phase to actual development.
I don’t know why you didn’t just make this video as yourself. I might have actually gotten past the first 10 seconds that way, and the editing/visuals looked good when I hovered over the timeline of various parts of the video. Ethical concerns aside, I think Judy Garland’s quote is very applicable here: “Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of someone else.”
