Does anyone happen to know if there will be a new update this year?
It would be time again…

Or do we have to wait until the middle of next year again?

No one knows. The teams working on Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition are the same ones who worked on Age of Empires: Definitive Edition.
