Nomadic update ideas

I’m sensing a lot of anti-Central Asian hostility. So I’m not engaging any further.

The discussion in this thread seems to have gone a bit too heated recently. I hope my posts aren’t offensive, it wasn’t my intention.

I think the issue lies in differing expectations: some players want to roleplay evolving from a conquering horde to an empire, others prefer roleplaying as nomads the whole time. Even though I belong to the first camp, I think both approaches are valid.

Can we not have free speech absolutist nonsense in here please?

Gokturks, Tanguts and Tibetans added to provide counterparts for the Chinese Tang Dynasty campaign! The three also get their own campaigns.

Choose between what kind of architecture you want:
Nomad - Mix - Settled
Isn’t that the absolute solution for most of the reskins in the game?
giving the “purist” what they want and giving the “I logically want this game to improve over time instead of gatekeeping others because of nostalgia” what they want

Then why Hungary has statues to commemorate them today, or why (as per Attila in popular culture - Wikipedia) “The Hungarian state founder royal dynasty, the Árpád dynasty claimed to be a direct descendant of the great Hun leader Attila”, or why he’s an important figure in the german epos “Nibelungenlied”. Is this not legacy?

Hungarians are Hunnic LARPers he is not even related to Magyar culture and there’s not proper Hunnic cultural element you can find, Attila is famous for being one of the most the most destructive, but there were dozens of barbarians leaders.

“CLAIMED to be” is propaganda to legitimize the image he wanted to project/claim, most historical leaders do that (according to that Japanese Emperors are demi-gods descendants of Amaterasu). He might be a descendant along a tens of thousands of other people alive at that time in the many centuries between Attila and Arpad, is like looking for descendants of Genghis Khan or Charlomagne, there might so many that is meaningless.

Sounds like a no true Scotsman argument really.
Besides, even to larp as an ancestor you need some sort of legacy otherwise how would you know what you larp as? That legacy is hun culture

The real propaganda is taking the historical loser’s side as ultimate truth.

Legacy: terror and destruction and Trauma in the west, for any nomadic people that wanted to replicate it went the waystation that was Panonia, The Magyars are just the last ones to come and the ones who actually built a civilization.

And what exactly is that culture? Horses and stirrups like many dozens of other nomads? They left nothing else than could be considered a unique distinctive civilization, just a famous ruler, That’s my point

That is the thing, not even being the child of someone means you are more capable or legitimate than the average person, claiming legacy is propaganda and has been done constantly by rulers, especially in nomadic cultures where strength mattered more than blood

And either way they are separated by around 450 years of history, what elements of the ”hun culture” could remain when the Magyars arrived there 450 years later?

Wrong, eg there’s evidence of material culture (Hunnic art - Wikipedia). Which in the context of AoE II is actually the closest to Sarmatian culture, not represented otherwise in the base game so far. This aspect makes Huns as a civ unique, although maybe difficult to visually represent.

what elements of the ”hun culture” could remain when the Magyars arrived there 450 years later?

A shared nomad tradition and a sense of belonging through similar historical fate? Go ask a Hungarian about the site as I’m not one

Also I’m not responding to the rest of your points as I believe they’re not in good faith and could just as easily be ascribed to Goths, Teutons, Vikings et al - especially the “terror and destruction” part.

This conversation is headed towards some uncomfortable territory. Maybe yall drop this cultural inferiority conversation before bad things happen. I don’t care but others might

I really like the idea of packing/unpacking the town center! That rings a bell, is that present in another game, maybe aoe4?
For nomadic civs, the change i’d do is give mongols the same bonus of huns of not building houses and replace the unique technology Nomads for something else. To balance this, I would get the hunting bonus from 40% down to 25%. This way Mongols are not that OP in maps with many boars/deer.

Hello all! Awhile back I posted about pastures being added to more steppe civilizations in the game. I think AoE2 is heading in the right direction after the last update at making civs feel more distinct from one another. Now I want to update that and give more ideas for a Steppe civilization update that can be achieved in a monthly patch. Below is my proposal. Keep in mind I am not a game dev and I could be wrong or missing things so feel free to add ideas or tweak things!

Pasture Balancing

  • Cost 110 wood still

  • Lower herdables food amount from 115 to 75

  • Keep techs locked behind mill to remove that advantage. Each herdables add 75 food this would scale as follows: Base 225, Domestication 300, Pastoralism 425, Transhumance 650

Add Pastures to more Civs

  • Add pasture to Mongols, Huns, Cumans, Tatars, (Berbers?) as farm replacement

  • Mongols’ hunt bonus DOES NOT apply to pastures

Add Steppe Lancer to Huns

  • Add steppe lancer and elite steppe lancer to Huns

  • Hun Steppe Lancer +1 pierce armor OR +5-10 HP

  • Remove knight line

Thoughts?

This math doesn’t compute as only the first two are divisible by 75

I don’t know about Berbers, but I think Pastures wouldn’t fit Tatars

There’s an issue:

  • If you give pastures to others, they’ll be overpowered.
  • If you nerf the pastures further, you ruin the Khitans.
  • If you give nerfed pastures and compensate the Khitans’ loss by giving them a pasture bonus, then what’s the point of giving pastures to others?

To add flavour to them, pastures is not something uniqe to khitans only.

There’s also the idea to allow dropping food and researching food techs in the Pastures.

And if the Cumans had Pastures with a bonus, we could finally get rid of that tedious second TC. I know there are fans out there, but it’s become absolutely tedious.
