Agreed. Age of Empires 2 had a small, feat loyal following(of which I was a part) well before the HD remaster. The Steam release brought on thousands of new fans since it’s the most popular platform to find new PC games.

Did the other AOE titles come to steam right away…or was it later well after release?
Vanilla AoE titles never came to Steam, with the exception of Age of Empires 3. The remastered versions of previous titles, Age of Empires 2: HD and Age of Mythology: Extended Edition, both were released to Steam.
Based on these precedents, I can assume at some point there would be a Steam release for Age of Empires 1: DE, as this is the final AoE title not on Steam.
