This tech is hardly used primarily because you need a castle but also it doesn’t help your monks enough to be worth it. Tech should make it harder to kill monk with archers. +3 PA isn’t enough. The monks just die to less overkill with 3PA vs 0PA. 6PA would allow crossbows to only do 1 damage per shot.
The idea is not to make Slav Monks immune to Crossbows.
Crossbows are still supposed to murder Monks.
Orthodoxy is just there to make Slav Monks slightly more resistant to damage, overall.
If Xbows only did one damage, then Slav Monk Rush would be unbeatable, since Knights and Eagles are Melee, so you need Ranged units to kill them before they convert.
You would still have Scouts though. Eagles have a natural conversion resistence too.
I don’t see Orthodoxy needing a buff though. Monks are supposed to be fragile. The only Aztec exception is quite tanky but it needs tons of ressources to get there anyway.
Well isn’t that the point? You pay for a castle and a tech for making a unit better against something?

It’s not uncounterable. Like 25-30 xbows can still clean up monks, while the monks can probably get off 3-4 conversions

1 damage per shot is still only 2 volleys with 15 crossbow. That is weaker than Aztec monks. It is definitely still counterable. You still have scouts and eagles also that do bonus damage. Also you need a castle and resources for the tech which delays the rush.
Aztec Monks require a huge Gold investment to get very strong, though.
but you dont need to spend extra res on a specific tech… and you are getting other benefits from those techs anyway… i thought UT was supposed to be better than any civilisations natural bonus? i guess that theory goes out the door whenever we look at s tier civs
i agree orthodoxy in its current state is garbage… if slavs didnt have so much going for them already it shouldve been one of the main UT to fix
I think +3/4, like any fully upgraded unit, would be just fine. +3/6 is waaay too big of a boost though
Unlike other units monks are slow and weak with 45 max HP
I have never seen nor experienced this upgrade. It’s not useful theoretically and practically.
If anything if should work the other way - it should be giving pierce armor but no melee.
Makes much more sense to me.

If it wasn’t hidden in a castle at the cost of a bunch o priests there might be room for abuse somehow. But 3/4 still won’t cut it
