Spent the entire morning pestering me and paid exactly 0 attention to the instructions I sent (with pictures!)

Sent the mod to him to show it works (also recorded a video) and he put the ZIP on the mods folder and then complained that it didn’t work.

Since I wrote the entire thing might as well share it here.

Anyways, how to make Malta train Musketeers.

First and foremost, make a folder for your mod, like this:

The direction will vary a bit (particularly because my computer is in spanish) but it’s always gonna be [Username] > Games > Age of Empires 3 DE > [Bunch of numbers] > mods > local

In this specific case your mod wants to modify the Maltese techtree. To do that you must find it using the resource manager.

Again, my computer is in spanish, but that’s the rough direction where you should be able to find the data bar, inside which is the techtree.

Once you find the techtreey file you should search for the age0malta file, which is the part of the script that handles all the techs and units that are available to Malta.

Once you find it, copy the entire tech (as in, everything between tech name and /tech) into a new text file, hopefully you got a program that can create Extensible Markup Lanuage (XML as the game says).

Something like this.

Here I found out the Sentinels are internally called “DEMalteseMusketeer” (very creative). So you’l want to replace them with the musketeer info. In this day and age, the only civ that has regular musketeers is the Spanish, so I’d go looking for that one.

Copy that info and replace the Sentinel, oh sorry, I mean the MalteseMusketeer info.

Here’s an extra step that I missed in the original tutorial, you’ll need to use mergemode to make the mod run, otherwise the game won’t read your changes.

Once you’re done save your file as techtreemods.xml (remember to save as Extensible Markup Language or it won’t work)

And this should replace the Sentinel with Musketeers.

However, there’s another step needed, for you see, Malta has an unique Barracks, and the DE devs only made it train exactly the units Malta has available and nothing more, so you’ll need to make a Protomods file as well.

This is all the info it needs. DEHospital is the name of the unique Maltese Barracks and listing the things you wanna add to it is enough to make the mod run.

Turns out our friend here immediately after asked me to make a mod that Made Sentinels look like Musketeers but is Multiplayer compatible

Now, I knew this was doable but I had never made a multiplayer compatible mod so it took me a hot second to get the mod working, bro was ANXIOUS

Anyways, turns out it’s fairly straightforward, it’s just a file I had never touched called Visualmods.xml it also goes in the data folder

It’s a massively janky mod but I can guarantee you it works and that it is multiplayer compatible.

Special thanks to the Falcon Company USA Civ Reskin mod which is where I copied the Visualmods info from lmao.

Now, after all this I packed the mod and sent it to him so he can have it.

Our friend complaints that the mod doesn’t work and I don’t know how to do it. I have no idea how he messed it up, but I have a strong suspicion as to why, I’ll let you all figure it out as homework:
