While playing the first mission, you get told that food cannot grow because it is the dead of winter but i can still make farms? Missed?

Depends on the difficulty you are playing. Lowest difficulty still can farm.
oh ok. Interesting how its set like that. I’m lazy and game gets boring so quicker is better
