Persistent technologies: a campaign idea

What if the technologies you researched in one mission carried over to the rest of the missions of a campaign? The technologies would have a multiplied cost (10x?) and research time, but once you researched them, they’d stay researched. What do you think?

Alternatively, or additionally, it could be used for a “world conquest” game mode.

Isnt this already a thing with chronicles campaigns?

It could be but isn’t. The mechanisms are there but there are no campaigns that do it.

This would be a cool idea but it might be hard to balance. Like in a build and destroy mission you could just idle before fully defeating the enemy to slowly research everything.

I generally find it kinda annoying to have to research the same technologies again every time in campaigns. Like how did they forget about the stuff they just learned recently?

Not sure if there is a good way to balance that.

You have special unique bonuses that you can unlock and keep but you have to research normal technologies again every time.

There are many ways to limit how long you can be getting technologies.

  1. A hard time limit. That is, “Win before x time or lose.”
  2. Faster growth of the enemy power for a future mission. (This one is a bit risky.)
  3. A hard cap on maximum technology level. Like limiting the player to feudal age, for example.
  4. Limited resources available.
  5. Incentives for completing the mission faster. (such as achievements)

And I am sure there are more that I have not thought of yet or have forgotten.

Btw, I’ve already thought of a few scenarios for a campaign with persistent technologies.

Not sure if it’s necessary for all technologies, but it’d be nice if more campaigns in general didn’t require to research the same stuff in every single scenario. I start the scenario in Imperial Age already but I have to upgrade the MAA line from the very beginning? No thanks lol, I’ll spam my UU instead.
