oh Byzantine Crossbowman

The fact that mongol message bearers hopped from one horse to another while were constantly on the move… thats pretty epic

Was very surprised to learn that not only were flails actually used in battles, but that they were farming tools to separate the wheat from the chaff. That, and how they were very much not a spiky ball on a chain.

The huihui pao being made by a muslim and the silver tree of karakorum being made by a french.

it could be the Bulgarians instead

Had no clue what an Oovoo was until the game launched. And I knew very little medieval Russian History.

And loved the documentary style approach of the launch campaigns.

What irks me though is Janissaries in castle age… and sometimes feudal. While they were arguably around at the time, they were a melee force until the gunpowder age.

The battle of the thirty, It left me in awe, it was so chivalrous to believe, especially coming from AoE2 and knowing how unchivalrous the thing will get in the hundred years war

I mostly don’t play the campaigns, but I had no idea fire arrows used gun powder. It really changed my impression about the evolution of the technology.

The functionality and usage of the real life “Nest of Bees” and its Korean equivalent the “Hwocha”
I had no idea such weapons existed until I played AoE4.
