Here’s the new poll! Rome has fallen, and this week we focus on the next time period. Germanic people building new kingdoms on the ashes of the Empire, Justinian’s attempt to reunite East and West, the rise of Islam, the fall of the Guptas and Sasanians, the birth of the Toltec and Wari Empires, those are as many events taking place in this time period.
Initially I wanted to cover as well with this poll, but in the end it was too many civs at once so I’ll have to split my polls in a different way.
If it’s unclear, when I put “Turkic” between square brackets, it implies Cumans, Tatars and possibly Turks could be used interchangeably to represent the civ at the moment. Similarly, we have “Meso” for Aztecs and Mayas.
If you think an important civ from the time period is missing, don’t hesitate to point it out. It’s possible that I simply forgot about it or didn’t know about it, in which case I will gladly be corrected.
Anyway, let’s vote and, hopefully, have a nice and interesting conversation!
I’d like to see some new early medieval civs but I don’t think they should go crazy with adding extremely similar civs that are encompassed by broader civ names. Additionally, the Alamans and Suebi are exactly what the Teutons are, so they don’t need adding (they also cover the Lombards). I think the Vandals and Scythians are the notable missing groups from the start of the Middle Ages, and would tie in well with the Romans, but they were likely excluded from the original game because they didn’t form lasting kingdoms, unlike the other barbarian peoples.
Actually, I’m fairly sure the Scythians did have a fairly large Empire in the BC era, they were fading out of existence by the time AOE2 starts though, so that wouldn’t really be able to justify them in AOE2 for me…
Speaking of Scythian-related topics (would love to see them in ROR btw), the Sogdians are a solid choice for this poll’s time period, yet they weren’t included.
I would like to see more early Indian civilisations, the current ones are kinda modern besides the Chariots.
And of course more Mesoamerican civilisations.
Zapotec would be a cool as a defensive civilisation.
They got 2 empty slots in the archery range that could be filled by some cool new regional unit (Aztecs and Maya don’t need to get that too).
I’m also a fan of the idea to add Saxons or other Germanic tribes to the game but I think I might be a little biased here.
Saxons would fill a gap in both Germany and England, which would be cool to have.
Alamans could also represent Switzerland.
But Europe is pretty crowded already, let us add people in other parts of the world first.
I think it would be really cool if they would make a DLC that adds civilisations to both normal AoE2 and RoR.
RoR definitely needs more love. And honestly the unit stats should generally be changed to be more AoE2 like.
[Bengalis]… Usually it’s k a l i n g a that gets censored, but sometimes for some reason it jumps to the next word. I don’t understand how the censorship works on those forums.
Voted for the current top eight (Tibetans, Nubians, Vandals, Khazars, Zapotecs, Chams, Gokturks, Mixtecs), plus the Avars, Sinhalese, Aksumites, and Frisians. Of these twelve, I’d be most surprised to see the Frisians, at least reflecting their kingdom during the Dark Ages vs. the non-feudal period right after.
In fact, this would be ideal. Players get one fully RoR-exclusive civ (Numidians) that mix the Romans’ infantry-siege elements with more focus on cavalry raiding. The other two civs get implemented for both RoR and the main game, reflecting their place in the transition from classical times to late antiquity. Pair all this with a ranked queue update to base RoR (plus less bugs than DLCs usually have at launch) and they might be able to revive the AoE DE side of things.
Going by the way AOE uses civ names, Scythians would cover other related peoples that ancient authors called “Scythian”, including the Alans, who survived along with the Vandals until 534.
I like the original concept for AOE2 that the game starts immediately following the fall of Rome and all the barbarian tribes evolve into medieval kingdoms. The Vandals and Scythians were important in the late Roman Empire.
I would love to see some sort of crossover between ROR and AOE2. The original AOE is sorely missing barbarian cultures. Before ROR, I always thought they should make a DLC called Fall of Rome that would bridge the gap between the two games.
