Yep, I called it. Saying “well, it’s not really Yggdrasil” - is the bare the could do to salvage the situation. Fine, by me, I suppose. They do tend to change things down the road, so maybe we’ll get a new wonder skin. And African peasants. And Chinese architecture. And etc.
Aoe had a cheat where the monk would attack with lightning.Maybe thats how the sorcerer would have worked? It would be cool if these stuff do get added in aoe2 now as editor things.we did get fantasy type unit skins earlier.
Sandy Petersen stated the lightning effect is also from the aborted fantasy game, like the dragon. The Saint Francis unit would indeed be nice to have in the base game, the effect can be used to represent both natural and supernatural lightning. In combination with the weather effects some users suggested…
Yes, that’s very careless…
Yes, exactly, hopefully if they rework the Slavs they’ll do that and rename them Muscovites and give them the Strelet…
The Dormition Cathedral as part of the Moscow Kremlin as seen in A Worthy Opponent
Yes, much better…
Yes, it would be like the prophet from Empire Earth…
Isn’t Wigdrasil the giant old manseal ash tree that appears in Norse mythology? This is basically not the “Age of Empire,” but more like something that should be going to the “Age of Mythology.”
Note: Northern Germanic peoples - Norse peoples: Geith · Daíns · Svea · Varangians / Western Germanic peoples: Saxons · Angles · Jutes · Anglo-Saxons · Frisians · Kauki · Teutoni / Elbe Germans - Langobardians · Marcomanni · Baiubari · Suebi · Alemanni · Katy (Battavians) · Keruschi · Kwadi · Kymbri · Turingian · Hermunduri / Eastern Germanic peoples (extermination) - Gepydids · Goths · Rugians · Vandals · Burgundians · Herulies
Note: The Jut and the Danes who remained on the Jutland Peninsula assimilated into one another and became the origin of the Danes, while the Danes who remained in England were either massacred or assimilated into the Anglo-Saxons.
This is "Age of Empires."This is not “Age of Mythology.” The reason ash trees were revered in Northern Europe was that weapons (spear poles/bow) were made from them. Notably, Odin’s spear “Gungnir” was also made of ash wood, and Achilles’ spear was also made of ash wood. For reference, the Danish dynasty appears as King Canute in Norway, and in England (during the era of the Kingdom of England) it appears only as “Canute.”
Interesting, we have one or two civs ingame for everybody here.
Growing and caring for it over generations. Nature as a wonder is fitting.
I like the tree. Is it more fitting for Swedes/Varangians, yes, but having it as a wonder is already more representative of Vikings than the original Viking civ ever was. Sacred trees was a big deal to Vikings, horned helmets was not. Horned helmets come from 19th century operas.
To add a historical example of sacred trees being a big deal. Mass Viking raids on Catholic settlements only began after Charlemagne’s military campaign, when he executed non-Catholics at mass, and destroyed the sacred tree Irminsul.
Give it to Vikings then (don’t)
A Saxon tree, not Danish…
yggdrasil is literally a copy pasted model from aom: retold in this case, at least find a more suitable structure to represent danes, there are plenty of better options
I never said it was Danish, I said sacred trees or woods were common. When the Catholics destroyed one this offended a much bigger area than the local Saxons. As evidenced by the massive increase in raids shortly thereafter.
the entire idea of representing Yggdrasil as a “normal” tree, even if majestic is pretty stupid. Here are a few things about Yggdrasil:
- the gods meet there daily
- the branches extend to the heavens
- dragons and stags live in it
- humanity lives beneath its roots
so no, Yggrdasil is not just a tree, that appears somewhere in the real world. the entirety of the world is part of the tree.
Claiming that this tree represents Yggdrasil betrays one’s ignorance about norse mythology. It makes about as much sense as having “the family tree” as a building in the game.
Whether a holy tree is a good wonder for the Danes, is a different question.
This is all I was arguing. So many were saying to remove it, and I disagree. Yggdrasil comments aside, the tree is a good wonder.
What do you mean with “comments” ? 11
It’s the devs who cal it Yggdrasil. So it’s clearly intended to be that. As I am aware yggdrasil is indeed an ash tree.
There exist no “real” portrays of yggdrasil, as it is a fictive mythological tree. But it is also a core holy element of a religion, which is ofc now extinct. But is that’s enough to justify the heresy of destruction?
We also wouldn’t make the Kaaba a wonder, would we?
THAT’s the 2 main problems.
And sorry, I don’t buy the whole narrative of “it’s just a tree even if it literally says yggdrasil”.
Okay. Don’t buy it, I don’t care. They have corrected themselves, and a sacred tree makes sense.
You sure? About all 3 of those? Fictive, a religion, now extinct. I can find you some who disagree on all three charges.
How is a tree a good wonder? You can’t build a tree. You can plant one. So having your whole eco spending 10 in-game minutes constructing a tree doesn’t make any sense.
I don’t think anyone wants to completely remove the asset from the game. It looks beautiful and it should remain accessible in the scenario editor.
We just want another Wonder.
Does switching Wonders between civs require data mods btw?
Have you ever seen a big tree in a park? Legend is construction workers excavate the site and plant them there.
It only switches the graphics; it does not modify the data.In another mod called Beautiful Castles and Wonders, there are already new graphics for castles and wonders that have been modified for almost all civilizations. For regular buildings, replacing the graphics would mean that the same building would be modified for all other civilizations using that building set. However, the previous unique castle graphics update allowed castles, like wonders, to have their graphics replaced individually for each civilization.
