[POLL] Should the devs finish the in-game Svan Tower building and make it a unique skin for towers after the Georgian UT is researched?

On the one hand I like the look of the svan towers. On the other this would remove some of the surprise factor. I am conflicted.

I think more visibility for the opponent helps them make better tactical decisions. Being totally surprised by a trait that isn’t visible in the stats is hardly fair. Besides, taller towers have the intimidation factor.

A possible compromise is to make the towers only change their skin for the player building them.

The problem is that the devs are too lazy to animate a new building destruction, let alone make a new Byzantine/Armenian building set instead of the Mediterranean one.

Why is this forum so full of (typically single campaign) players who think aesthetic changes are such a huge priority when the fundamental mechanics are still not working properly? Aesthetic changes should be mods, not part of updates. It’s a waste of time for the devs to be thinking about re-skins when there are other far more important priorities for them to be focusing on.

I play this game for the aesthetics and history, not mainly the gameplay.

Why is this a waste of time?? The issues like pathfinding are not related to this, which is a separate issue. The game needs more attention to details for old and new civilisations, which is separate from balancing matters which is in a good state after many efforts.

in this day and age time to learn tools like blender or 3d software. towers/buildings doesn’t have any animation except destruction and can simply attach some flags with player color or somethig

everybody learns modding so the game will flourish even more

No.

Firstly, this would require three graphics (watch tower, guard tower, keep) with clear differences between them. I think there are several Svan tower graphics but they’re too similar for this.

Secondly, I don’t think any other unique techs change any unit or building graphics, so it would be odd if only this one did.

I’m all for functional Svan towers in the scenario editor though.

Generally I’m not that fond of Castle Age tower unique techs, because they feel like expensive compensation for the fact that generic towers aren’t much good in Castle Age. You’re usually better off building a castle, and you have to build one before getting the tech.

Well, no. I figured there only had to be one.

How I would like to see the change is that the Svan Tower upgrade replace the Keep upgrade in the University.
Like the Winged Hussar replace the normal Hussar for the Poles and Lithuanians.
And that the Georgians get a new UT, one preferably move the Georgians away from the Monaspa one trick pony.

Oh, whoops. Good point. Although I think this is complicated by the three types of tower in a way that harbours are not.

But all three towers are affected by the upgrade, right?

Because the game is full of (typically SP) players who like good aesthetics. Their preferences will always be relevant, even if you think that something else is more important. I do think that where possible, bugfixes should be prioritized over new content, but in practice, the different dev teams will usually be working on distinct projects in parallel, and the ability to transfer bandwidth between departments to focus on a priority item is probably quite limited. But graphics are one of the safest possible additions AFAIK - they have a rather limited capacity to create new bugs, unlike adding new civs or mechanics.

I tend to agree, although it depends on the civ. Japanese might be the best case for getting their UT as Yasama is competing with one of the most situational UUs and probably has the most useful effect by 3Xing DPS. Even had a couple games where I get it before Guard Tower or other Uni techs. Whereas civs with better UUs, like Chinese, Koreans or Georgians may want to save their stone for castles, and their training time for UUs instead of UTs.

This seems like the best solution to me if there is to be a visual change after the research.

Perhaps the Svan Tower can replace both the Guard Tower and Keep so it’s available in the Castle Age. Its major difference from both would be the presence of 5 population space and maybe extra garrison space, in addition to extra power of course.

Ask the devs to let us download and modify the buildings graphic models then.
