POLL: Should the Variant Civilization Names Change?

Using “Variants” you can also create future civs such as:

  1. Iberian Kingdoms - Kingdom of Asturias, Kingdom of Galicia, Kingdom of Aragon, Kingdom of León, Kingdom of Castile,
  2. Jagiellonian Dynasty - Kingdom of Poland, Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kingdom of Bohemia, Great Moravia, Duchies of Silesia, Kingdom of Croatia, Kingdom of Hungary
  3. Kalmar Union - Kingdom of Denmark, Kingdom of Sweden, Kingdom of Norway

There are no complaints with such names, but judging by the names that we see now, Relic did not think of that. All new civilizations are not states, but characters: Jeanne, Dracula, Saladin and some Chinese.
BeastyqtSC2 has confirmed that all new civilizations will have a hero like Khan of Mongols. This will be the main difference from the old variants.

Dracula, new mongol vampire variant

Yea it’s a super weird choice to thematically focus each variant around a specific person, completely breaks the theming of the game so far… which is EMPIRES, not people or small groups. They have to be picking groups that were around hundreds of years or who are at least distinct enough to be a variant. Jeanne of Arc is not a civilization, nor should it be a variant civ. I also don’t want “Empire of Jade” or “Sultan’s Army.” Way too vague and not very exciting. Like I don’t understand why they didn’t pick the Gupta Empire of India. Similar assets, same language, just change around some units and mechanics and boom you got a great civ. Could also do Celts based off of English, or Teutonic Order based off HRE (I guess Order of the Dragon is fine). This gotta be changed it’s killing my hype for the DLC.

Then simply make them just like Khans… Dauphin for French, Sultan for Abbassid, Emperor for Chinese and Grand master for HRE … no need to make entire civs on these

11 minute about heroes

That guy is the pinnacle of ignorance. He goes on to disregard people’s worries about the naming convention as well. “just play” he says, yet he has somehow been unable to demonstrate a shred of empathy or care for a massive portion of this game’s playerbase and audience.

It is as I have always said. These pros do not care about the vast majority of the things that has made Age of Empires stand out. They do not care about immersion, about history, art, music, they do not care about mods or editors. All they care about is 1v1, and the launch of this game shows exactly what audience these developers have been appealing to all this time.

I 1000% agree with your point.
He and DeMu are really toxic streamers.
Just watch from 13:36 min/sec

They will mute anyone who criticizes, shares different opinions, etc., and bully other players.
They should learn from the Viper, T90, or other AOE streamers with great reputations.
Most AOE2 streamers are real gentlemen.
Never bullies others, always respects different opinions, etc.

I hope Teutonic Order for an HRE variant civ
I think they are going to work as different commanders in Starcraft 2.
So yeah we have the same civ foundations.

The fact that Count Dracula will be a hero in the Order of the Dragon is only my guess. But there is a chance that main hero of Order of the Dragon civ will look like this:

My biggest worry is the series starts moving away from its historical theme. Now it’s just random fantasy-like names. But what’s next?
Yes non of previous AOEs are perfectly historically accurate, but they did their best accommodating (I know some could pick on it so I highlight this word) the historical theme into the gameplay, with limited resources of their time. They tried to make you feel like you’re playing with some real civilizations which was the main selling point of the game. Otherwise why would anyone choose it over the “RTS games that are better at being an RTS”?

Moreover, all of the updates to the older games are in the direction of better historical representation and none reverts it.
Like AOE3 gave several units more authentic looks and accurate names, (yes yes I know they are still not 100% historically accurate) but never change a more accurate one to a less accurate one. They are giving the redcoat an actual redcoat uniform. They are NOT updating it with a made-up uniform or names like “warrior of the Duke”.

I spent so much time arguing against people who object those historically accurate changes for reasons from “I cannot remember them in 1v1 espooooorts” to “go read a history book if you want history”, but if the direction of the series itself no longer values that, lthen I’m probably done with it.

Actually. Its quite accurate to present some sort of monster from medieval times. Many of the known mythological creatures are something that ppl thought exist or exists in different form.

Like Kraken is suspected to be colossal or giant octopus, so even if the kraken itself is mythological creature from stories its background is tied to reality.

And EVERY civilization has these.

So its quite alright to present stuff like this in AOE4

Age of Empires is not Age of Mythology!!!

Well said!
Now, I remember what Adam Isgreen was saying about History in AOE games LOL

You should be done with it. The fact is, the likes of yourself and @ahioz9426, @AndyPXIII and plenty of others in this community, have tried relentlessly to establish a standard and have tried to warn developers of significant pitfalls, most of which has been ignored for all of these years.

I don’t think they deserve you guys as community members. It is a waste of your time, is my take.

Doesn’t matter.

AOE4 is in middle ages and lot of stories about massive creatures were told during that time where they were thought to be real or were tied to reality somehow those representing “sea monster” or some sort plays in the part of that era and history just fine EVEN when we nowdays know that those were mythological creatures or work of fiction

That is what AOM tries to deliver, not AOE.
Otherwise, who needs AOM, when AOE delivering mythological things…
