Some in the community claiming that “Three Kingdoms” theme of the new DLC is to get attention from East Asian community particularly Chinese people. This is not a false claim as we saw in the past many franchises used Three kingdoms concept to hype them up. For example Three Kingdoms total war blew up in China. It was one of the best selling total war game. Dynasty warriors is an absolute hit franchise. There are more movies about Cao Cao than of Taizu or Yongle. So I think this DLC will succeed in China or East Asia Region. But I may be false and that is why this poll.
This Poll is not redicule the devs or their decision, I am personally hyped for the DLC. Just want to know what the people of East Asia who are the subject of the DLC think about it.
Which Country are you from ? (Please be honest. Lying will just create more confusions)
China
Japan
Korea (North or South)
Mongolia
Vietnam
None (But I still want to vote)

For those who are not from East Asia but still want to share their opinion -

I’m South Korean. I also expected that this DLC would add ‘China’s peripheral forces’ such as the Khitans and Jurchens, Uighurs, Tanguts, and Tibet, just like the Indian civilization was divided.
At least, I thought it would be divided into the same Chinese dynasties (Song, Tang, Ming).
However, the result is the Three Kingdoms. I am sure that this result is because they were mindful of China’s feelings. (Tibet in particular)
There are already enough games that can replace the Three Kingdoms. There are Koei games and Total War. It is really disappointing.
German guy here:
I don’t dislike the civs, I’m fine with 3K. But I dislike Hero units in competetive play enough to not buy this dlc and potentiall stop playing ranked unit this is fixed!
I think the Shu sound utterly broken for a 4v4 flank civ! They have a small food bonus for a 19 pop double archer build and have a unique tech that should make them one of the strongest arb civs (for teamgames) in the game.
But this all doesn’t really matter to me, as long as there are hero units in ranked!
I think they got the idea from AOE 4. When they added Jon of Arc hero civ to AOE 4 everyone was mad, then it became one of the most played civ in multiplayer. Will have to wait and see how this plays out in AOE 2
Since the official announcement, about 95% of the online feedback I have observed in China has been negative or even angry. In fact, I only saw 2-3 comments that I thought I could accept or like this new DLC (one of which came from this forum). This involves historical framework issues and more serious game balance problems.
For me personally, at first I felt angry, then worried, and now it’s helpless and calm. I may also have a hidden identity. My ancestors are likely from Tangut, and I am a descendant of Tangut. In my hometown village, many elderly people know that our ancestors fled from the Western Xia region around 800 years ago. At that time, it was indeed around the time when the Mongols conquered Western Xia, but due to historical reasons, the tribe members did not preserve their genealogy well, so I cannot 100% confirm this story. I was supposed to have the opportunity to experience the shock brought by ancestral stories for the first time, but now it has become a complete farce (like someone who seems to want to wipe a memorial tablet for your ancestors, but in reality, he deliberately drops it on the ground after picking it up, but he thinks it’s fun and I will love it).
I think there might be a disconnect between the dedicated core of the community and the larger part of casual players.
Most players obviously don’t engage with the Forum or even Reddit or Social Media about the game since most players play many different games.
I personally don’t interact with the community of 90% of games I play so I don’t know what changes are controversial unless the game is so big that I see people talk about it everywhere.
The question is if all those people out there will like the DLC or not.
The 3 Kingdoms are obviously more widely known and popular then civs like the Tonguts or Bai/Dai.
Yeah the Tonguts, Khitans and Jurchans were mention in the Mongol campaign but would you know about them if they never appeared in it?
How many people thought “who are the Cumans” when the Definitive Edition released?
People are obviously biased towards civilisations that share names with modern day countries. Almost everyone knows Armenians and Georgians.
The 3 Kingdoms is well known in Chinese people’s memory and a good culture symbol. Make the history in Game is not a bad idea.
However, the 3 Kingdoms is so occlusive and have few interaction with other civilization. Also They are just a short period (60 years)of Chinese Civil War. AOE2’s civ usually are nations, countries or kingdoms, which have long history but not a short dynasty. In Chinese history, There are many similar civil war period.
If you cannot understand, you can consider the 7 kingdoms of British of Heptarchy or 66 kingdoms of Japan in Sengoku period. That’s insane to consider putting them all into one game.
Anyway, I will still support the game, but that more about the novel castle and monastery model.
