No, that was clear. I just wanted to add the more long term aspect of forming the map and establishing map control over the course of a match. Blocking, man-made structures and a good hill position were a big part of that. Thats all mostly gone… its one big open flat map, and all thats left to control the flow of units is having high DPM static defenses or stone walling off natural choke points (between forests, cliffs, water)
It’s his thing. Dodge and weave, dodge and weave !
Read my statements properly before trying to accuse me of being dishonest.
I very clearly stated that some of the abilities I was mentioning were passive abilities.
And then I explained to you that Aoe IV isn’t purely just hitting stuff with units either. They have active and passive abilities in the game that a good player will utilize.
My purpose of bringing up the fact that other newer Aoe games don’t have it is pretty obvious. Not every Aoe game has Aoe 2’s features. And they aren’t lesser games or even less competitive because they don’t have quick walling.
It plays a bit part in that game. Quick walling doesn’t have to exist in every Aoe game and it clearly hasn’t if we look at Aom and AOE3 (or any of the new titles really). Its an archaic mechanic that only has relevance in Aoe 2. I brought up a similar mechanic in regards to Mangonel deleting and yet you have conveniently chosen not to bring that up as a point. I suppose you are fine with that being an only Ao2 feature.
If trying to say that you don’t mean quick walling specifically then you need to be specific about what exactly is missing that makes you think micro is gone from the game.
You’re an RTS player. You should know that engagements aren’t simply smashing units together with flat stats. Micro exists that will help you in most engagements and thats completely neglecting active abilities.
Making concaves, Kiting, retreating low hp units, flanking, etc. Will exist in most RTS games. And being able to master those basics makes for really rewarding gameplay.
Imperial officials need to be told where to supervise production. They only passively collect gold as taxes. I was specifically talking about their “supervise” ability. Prelates only buff/heal villagers passively. You can upgrade the monks to buff your infantry as well. I’ll grant you that one is passive.
I really don’t understand why you think castable attack buffs on the Khan still aren’t good enough to you. A good player still needs to know when to use them (they have a cooldown) and the Khan himself is a fairly weak target. None of his abilities are passive. The dude has like 4 castable abilites. Palings, Rapid fire, and even healing camps are literally combat abilites. Just because palings need to be casted slightly before being charged doesn’t mean they “straight up cannot even be used in a fight”. That is simply a wrong statement, their only usage is for fights.
They aren’t as popular as Aoe 2 for multiple reasons but that is a different conversation. And neither are they devoid of competitiveness. You can’t simply dismiss them as competitive games because they aren’t as popular as Aoe 2.
Feel free to speak with @AussieDrongoBBQ & @BoitTV about this, Im sure they have plenty of high-level explanations about how their respective games are engaging and competitively rewarding.
I’ve also explained to you that mangonels can be dodged. Why do you think not having a specific “split formation” hotkey has removed that? Micro your damn units with loose formation or manually split them. Failing to micro your units out of a mangonel shot will still lead to you getting punished.
I mentioned all abilities as those are things players will have to think about and utilize in order to benefit from their mechanics. Sure you may not personally appreciate good economic micro but as a player it is something that feels rewarding when you do it well.
You’re completely missing the point. The fact thousands of people watch people play chess online totally disproves your comment that “people don’t watch chess”.
Yeah and people at Wololo V were playing Empire wars. Thats just a gamemode/ruleset.
They are still playing chess, same as Viper was still playing Aoe 2.
You’ve also completely ignored Dota 2 which is also a massively watched Esport I brought up. How convenient.
Glad someone finally addressed the arrow hit- hot debate… its settled.
Aoe will have unavoidable arrows
Sc2 had solid hits and yet is still esport capable
Whether it effects aoe for better or worse time will tell.
My hope for this thread is that aoe devs like the one who was quoted many times here- will feel the love” and keep the esport options alive.
Someone else mentioned unit caps at 200ish- with various things… would a “medieval total war” battle style with thousands of armies be conducive in an esport setting?? My thought comes out from sc2 commander stukov” who can just spam boat loads of minions and u could just attack move” people Love stukov for the relaxed swarming capabilities… but if there was a civ capable of a similar tactic… would it be viable now especially since micro avoiding arrows is nerfed
