Ram upgrades should increase their garrison capacity

Now that infantry are viable again, I feel like capped ram should garrison 10 infantry and siege ram should be 15 capacity. Slightly encourages rams play a little bit more but seems like a subtle enough change to not be broken.

Let’s increase it 1 capacity at a time so we can see what that perfect garrison capacity is but otherwise I agree with you.

Rams used to have 4/5/6 garrison capacity. Also speed was increased from 0.5/0.5/0.6 to 0.6.
A very recent update increases the melee armor from -3 to -3/-2/-1.

They also equalized Transport Ship garrison capacity.

So I doubt they will add a different amount of garrison capacity based on upgrades again.

In that case, capacity could always be adjusted to 6/8/10 if you think 6/10/15 is too OP.

Overstuffing rams would have weird results. They only gain +10 damage vs buildings per infantry, so to double a basic ram’s attack you’d need to garrison 15 infantry inside (16 for capped, 20 for siege). The speed bonus is more relevant (at the current 6 it’s +50% reaching 0.90) but then it would become quite ridiculous, at 15 for a siege ram it would mean a speed equivalent to the knight line without the speed tech (1.35), while a fully stacked mongol siege ram would be the fastest land unit in the game (besides cheat units).

So damage-wise keeping your units in several rams would be more advantageous as the damage increase is quite pathetic, while speed-wise the unit would become ridiculous… not a great plan. Unless the speed bonus is capped before but then I question if the extra capacity would be used as rams would become a golden prime target for mangonels, much more than it is now.

Part of the idea of having the same garrison capacity is rams have the same size, they just get built in stronger materials allowing to tank more damage and deal more. Upgrading wouldn’t mean more room inside.

The issue of the ram is it’s a slow unit (unless you are, wait for it…) which takes some time to get from a workshop and probably requires some escort if you don’t want a stray cav unit to get to it on the way, so how about giving infantry the same ability as in AOE4 which is building rams on the field, provided you have a siege workshop built somewhere ? That way it would remove the need of having a siege workshop in direct proximity. Over the regular method of the siege workshop (which would still be the only way of upgrading them), using infantry would allow building anywhere (and why not repairing) but having your units busy for some time.

Also add that ability for the siege tower as it’s very forgotten.

My impression was that rams get slightly bigger with each upgrade. If it’s only +2 capacity per upgrade it wouldn’t need to be that much bigger to accommodate them. Also my suggestion was not to increase ram speed or attack. Just the garrison capacity only.

I would ask for Guard towers and Keep garrison increase according to max population. This may also encourage ram play.

They do not, they just get metal parts bolted on them. The body remains the exact same down to the exact planks, so the internal space remains is unchanged.

The only parts that grows are the ram head for the capped (making it a bit longer) then the wheels for the siege (raising the ground clearance). The metal plates also raise the height a little bit, but it remains the same structure.

Way too much, could try 7 and 8 or 8 and 10 while decreasing the speed gained per unit garrisoned by 0.01.
