Ranked map issue: players prevent matches from starting because they dislike the map. I’m providing a solution

Please remove the Anatolia map from ranked matches, as it is a waste of time. You queue for 5 minutes, and when a match is finally found, someone often leaves before the game even finishes loading. Then everyone has to queue again.
Alternatively, add a voting system when Anatolia appears, so players can choose another map without having to re‑queue.

The same applies to the Oasis map, Megalopolis, and the other water maps; players don’t want to play on those maps. The main reason is that these maps either have few resources or are very difficult for new players to play.

Absolutely not. I want to add every map in the game to the pool.

Noobs have nothing to do with it. You’ve just never played water maps against Raijin. Japan is broken, that’s why everyone skips water maps.

Nobody wants to play water maps because premade teams are invincible on water maps. It’s a waste of time to play water maps when you know premade teams will win.

Furthermore, most of the maps are deserts with very few animals; there are only berries and not even any trees. Nobody likes playing those maps because they’re awful. The desert maps were only created so players would quit the game. The developers in charge of creating the maps are really doing a terrible job.

Rather than remove anatolia we should adress the issue of dodging without repercussions before games begin. Its not even counted as a loss.

Even if you remove anatolia people are still gonna dodge the one that replaces it as their least liked map.

A voting map system would be great, but i do think temporary bans from ranked queue to people that leave in the game lobby should be in place to dete this type of attitude. Taken to more extreme cases you can actually dodge all maps you dont play well at and just farm points on the ones your god has a edge (which some people do).

I will not play on the water with broken Japan.

As strong as SoO boats are, thats not even the meta on the current ranked water maps funny enough (AKA theres more broken things)

Although A voting system is nice sometimes it leads to some weird situations. CS used to put voting system in their casual games and that lead to every one voting for Dust II. It caused the community to be incradible “anti-change” which started to hurt the game in the long run Although the devs did aknowledge it at the end and did some stuff about it.

This is a very good Idea! But also you cannot deny that water maps have really strong haters amongst the AoE players.

Even though that I dodge every water map I do agree that we need punish who leave/dodge. But we also need to considers: How will player base react if we force them to play water maps? I argue that it will impact the player experience super negatively.

The problem with water isn’t just japan. It is everything about it. Water maps don’t require you to change, It requires you to play a lot more better. Hybrid maps are way more difficult than Land maps, They provide very mediocore naval combat experience, It probably has (I don’t usually talk about balance) a worse balancing situation compared to land (I believe some gods are just not good on water at all), All of this just for it to be a map that is less fun to play compared to land map.

Tell that to the Setonaikai map. Also, in Anatolia, there’s no point in going to water if the enemy has access to Raijin.

Because this should have been done from the very beginning. I mean, Archipelago should have been included in the ranked map pool, and water should have been balanced in the first two patches. Besides, I don’t believe that 1600 nerds are afraid to play on water, so it’s unclear where all these water haters come from. I’ve liked naval battles since AoE 1.

Having to play 50% of the total number of maps had a very negative impact the player experience.

Nobody gives a shit.

Even I can do it. What’s the problem? I’m only interested in the SoO boats.

Water maps have always been the black sheep of aoe franchise. Balancing them is hard due to how transport ships work and the huge defender advantage. The only game that had something remotely close to playable is aoe3 where you have all ships capable of transport and even training ships.

Aom Soo boat is just a LOL moment for devs, they know nobody cares about water. And water balance in retold is much, much improved over TT. That was a clown fiesta from start to finish.

The solution is

  1. Give players map bans like aoe2, or map downvotes like aoe4; and
  2. Add a dodge penalty, where players who dodge maps (or resign too quickly) are unable to queue back up for a certain period, with the length of that period increasing the more often they do it.

The rules should not be related to any specific maps.

Yea, but when does it stop? Lets say we remove water, then people will dodge the next X map that they dont like. The only thing keeping people from just reseting until the perfect game they want is the hassle of closing and opening the game and queue times. If you dont wanna play water, which is fine, its a preference, you can just resign after the match starts.

A good solution to that would be map bans and to implement punishment to dodging maps.

This feels like a routine with you, you are out of your depth in high level water play. In neither of those maps its the most prevalent god or strategy, but im aware your experience in low elo dictates what the best thing to do is. As always, if you are interested in learning an not just complaining i can show you in a game.

Yea this seems like a very good solution to work it through. Dunno about the quick resign, but if the others parts are also implemented it would drop some of the issues i have with it. Like i cant really argue against an 800 that resigns when he sees his opponent is a tournament player, he is prob just looking for a chill game, not a stomp.

Write an AI so that transport ships can transport units between two points automatically, triggered by their load. Or, the laziest option, as implemented in other games in the series, have islands so large that they can’t be fully controlled, or so small that siege ships could wipe out half a base. Naval trade, like in AoE 1. You can do anything as you want.

They balanced the naval battles, what the problem with other mechanics.

The joke wasn’t funny.

If you introduce this communism, you’ll only be playing with three maps from the pool. That’s insane.

So that Japan gets more Elo?)

70 APM is the only thing that distinguishes the so-called high level from the normal one.

You don’t have to. It just uninstalls.

They arent dominating in any of the water maps but sure, whatever fits what you want. Being able to cherry pick the maps you play from a pool seems poor design, but with no map bans or preferences or penalties theres no incentive to not do it.

This is funny to me with the fact that theres high level players that play on around 60 apm and theres even a series of a guy getting to 1600 limiting his max apm with a program. It sounds more of an excuse to call it on apm imo, and no, thats far from what defines high level gameplay, theres players with 100+ apm that are still low level (1200 or lower).

a loss would solve it

What an absolutely stupid comment. Do you even know how it works in the other games in this franchise?

Agreed, that would deter people from dodging as much

I know that 800 Elo guys and nerds who only know how to play Dust 2 will also vote. And I am not satisfied with the results of this vote.

He needs medical attention. He’s a neurotic who gives the same command to his units eight times in a row.

As I said, voting only benefits nerds.

After all, they are the ones who are skipping water maps.

Cajocu01 Just for you. Winrate amaterasu

Susano win rate

Stop talking nonsense

Please explain how you think this works.

Everyone who plays ranked has the choice to ban some of the maps, or to vote that they would rather not play that map, depending on how it’s done. If they don’t want to play certain maps, they don’t necessarily have to, without creating the terrible experience for everyone else caused when they dodge.
