Relentless crashing | update edit: ***Maintenance timer causes nearly certain instant crash if you have old main menu!***

Edit: Disabling old main menu mod appears to solve the issue, supposedly some issue with the maintenance countdown timer. See:

  • OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 10

:arrow_forward: ISSUE EXPERIENCED

The game keeps crashing all the time (most often before even reaching main menu). It’s crashed over a dozen times only today. Sometimes it crashes only after going to options and then exiting options. It always crashes at least when exiting a menu like options.

I initially thought it was only occuring on my new 4k display but when successfully moving the game back to the 1080p monitor it crashed afterwards anyway.

No error message is received.

Attempted solutions so far (after which problem still persists):

  • rebooting the PC
  • verifying integrity of game files
  • updating drivers
  • updating OS

:arrow_forward: REPRODUCTION STEPS

 List CLEAR and DETAILED STEPS we can take to reproduce the issue ourselves… Be descriptive!

Here’s the steps to reproduce the issue (reliably reproduced over 7 times now):

  1. Get a 4k monitor (having now multiple displays along with old 1080p monitor)
  2. Try out AoE2DE on 4k monitor
  3. Witness it crash before it even reaches main menu (~57% of the time)
  4. If step 3 has been overcome, enter a menu like options
    5a. Exit options
6a. Witness the game crash before it can return to main menu
5b. Change to windowed mode and then move the game back to the 1080p monitor where you change it to 1080p and full screen there
    6b. Exit options
  5. Witness the game crashing anyway

The game was supposed to keep running until I exited it (it was supposed to not crash).

hi @Hjoerleif Thanks for the report, could you please attach the .mdmp file from the crash? this would be in “C:\Users\USER\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\logs” and will have a format like this “AoE2DESteam-XXXXX-2021.06.23-09.56.40.mdmp” Just look for the one with the date and time when this happened and attach it so we can investigate what the issue is

Hello @DirefulLily9407

There are no files of the type .mdmp in that directory for me. There is however a .txt file with a timestamp corresponding to the crash: 2021.08.31-20.06.50.txt (7.5 KB)

@Hjoerleif it should always generate .mdmp files when crashing, anyways I notice you are using old main menu mod, so this issue is currently being tracked, thanks for the report!

@DirefulLily9407 well the only files in that directory are .txt files for me, and I even searched for mdmp but nothing came up - I also have the file explorer set to display any hidden files. Thank you for replies
