I’m struggling to find any examples that fit this description. Did you have any studio or game where this was the case?
A good example would be Gas Powered Games and Petroglyph
Just check steamdb

So after AAA STAR WARS™ Empire at War, they tried to make E-Sport Universe at War and MMO End of Nations , but it backfired, leaving them only resources to make smaller games.
Gas Powered Games started with Supreme Commander and sold like 1 million copies.
MOBAs were a trendy thing in 2010 , so they made 2011 Demigod,
a huge flop that sold merely 115.9 k by Gamalytic
Age of Empires Online launched 2012 on steam was also a financial disaster.
Gas Powered Games never recovered to make games again.
The way I see it, “money people in charge” can only decide to make resource drainers.
They don’t have the insight, what makes a game, a game. The game people pay money for.
It’s a difference if you ask investors for money after Supreme Commander and can say,
hey I sold AAA game 1 million time, or my last project was a big flop.
Looking what money people in charge by relic decide to waste money on,
they will simply sooner than later kill of that company.
Relic is doing DLC for Company of Heroes 3
is ok but as you said is not for the one who know what a aoe it is for which msot of them played at least once aoe 2.
- It depends but therte a lot of moment we can considerer as the best moments of aoe 4 one of them could be beta to launch during the hype. Anyway the reason of the ´fluctuation on the layerbase was because the hypé on some dlc which evaporated rapidly and the hard discount which lead to the number even though we dont know if in the end they got benefit from the base game. Dlc in other hand can be discussed as there so much hype before but now we see recent dlc after japanewse and byzantine which was the peak on hype less relevant as it was compared to that one
2.yes and no we have a good playerbase but its stagnant and you can say its okay because is a dedicated playerbase but I doubt it is smth good when dlc are coming more slower and it with less content and the quantity pf p´layer returning is lesser and lesser. They already brought the 2 favorites (byzantine and japan)
3.yes i do and i surprising that still relevant considering the changes and their “fixes”. we can start with the pause option or the quitters/cheaters or siege that is either op or weak or ui that some mods have to fix it, ranked issues specially on team ones or the lack of campaign that are not impresive as their precessors or the lack of consistent of the designing of a civ that made them lackluster to balance or repetitive with some unit mechanics that makes more symetric than assymetric from the unit roster perpective
Another clue
beehgimd aoe 2 and sc2
below the expectation anticipated and lñead to serious balance issue liek joan de arc or overtuned civs which lead to a anothe year of rebalance to fix the civ
which is dying as caster are retiring from the pro scenes
yes but alway remain 9-8k or 10k if we add gamepass which only gives the total numebr of player but not the max amount of player currently active in a day.
