I think it’s actually the choice of the name “Tatars” that seems weird, to me at least. When I saw the preview screenshots for DE, I assumed the civ would be called “Timurids”, although I guess they didn’t want to name a civ after a dynasty. More honest names, like “Mongol Empire Successor States” or “Persianised Turco-Mongols”, are clearly too much of a mouthful. I assume they also thought that “Tatars” had decent name recognition, although given that all the Youtubers mispronounce it (or at least misannunciate it), I’m not convinced about that.

Maybe Uzbeks could have worked?
I’ve said the same since they came out. Tatars could have worked fine as an umbrella for all the steppe turkic peoples. From gokturks to timurids.
