I think RoR as AoE I in AoE II was a good idea a priori for all reasons cited before, but:
- The marketing was really bad, at least in terms of long-term untiing the community (of AoE I) in one game. I understand Microsoft made more money this way, but I think they should have done the following: (i) advertise RoR massively in Vietnam; (ii) let people purchase RoR without purchasing AoE II DE; (iii) make it 75% cheaper for AoE I DE owners; (iv) announce a RoR-only tournament.
- No ranked queue. It is actually incredible this does not exist, and it entirely killed competitive play.
- They should let people choose their favourite graphics (AoE I or AoE II). Admittedly, this is more difficult, so I understand they did not actually do that.
- They should add all AoE I DE campaigns into RoR.
The pathfinding, etc. in RoR are really good otherwise, but these key mistakes made it very unpopular, which is very sad to see…
By the way: @devs are you planning to add the other campaigns into RoR?
