RIP AOE3

no, im not gonna simply jump to their other games. The low effort bad quality DLCs for Age 2, the Age Mobile p2win ripoffs, whats next? a Age 5 which then is gonna have micro transactions? Edgy streamer features tro appeal to Gen Z? . If they think they can now dont care anymore about their core fanbase and hope they will be happy with Age 2, they calculated wrong. Im not happy with their actions over the last years, and i sincerely hope it will get better, but at the moment I doubt it.

This is kinda disrespectful to the Chronicles DLC.

okay, except this one. Which was made by modders which are well known for their excellent work. The last 3 before that were terrible.

I only think V&V deserves that title. Return of Rome is a two-edged sword bc it mainly tries to appeal to AoE 1 players.
Mountain Royals on the other hand is good, but sadly more expensive than the previous DLCs despite offering a similar amount of content. I like that they brought AoM’s Ox Cart over to AoE 2.

Yep maybe consider another developer to work on it

Yep, but actually I think that would be better.
They could come back to the OG gameplay formula while depicting the same setting!

I’ve been telling you, devs changed in 2022. They lost all their passion, all they care about now is profit maximizing. They do the least amount of work required to get as much money as possible.

I’ve been told I’m an idiot and here we are, witnessing the death of Age Of Empires 3. They killed Age of Empires 1 too.

They’ve been dumpstering aoe2 with shitty content as well. Not what we like, but what makes them the most money.

Another thing I was being called out all the time is that I was saying adding Malta, USA and Mexico were big mistakes because civ numbers are finite. We could be having Poles, Persians and Thais instead of them…

They didn’t change, activity on AoE 3 slowed down pretty much as soon as they teased AoM Retold.

The most disgusting about this news - is the fact that AoE3 will soon be 20 years!

Unfortunately, they seem to be censoring even the comments.

I left these comments and Facebook was blocked by the authorities today

Unfortunately, yes. The clearly gave so little thought to AOE3 that they cancelled it right as it was coming up to a massive anniversay (20 years since legacy, 5 years of DE)

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity (or indifference)

Yes, they had done well with the Mediterranean DLC and the game still had a good future ahead of it… in retrospect, I feel like they should have focused on the Baltic DLC already in 2022 to release it in August 2023 with the game for free and not waste resources on Return of Rome, which was useless because the mode died anyway… they wanted to squeeze more out of AoE 2 in 2023 and abandoned 3, which was what needed content the most… the development of Retold in the middle didn’t help either…

Maybe releasing a European DLC so early was a bit counterproductive, they should have alternated between continents… after KotM they should have focused on the Middle East (Persia and Oman) in August 2023 with the release of the free game, then America (Tupi and Mapuche) in 2024 and there only in 2025, Poland and Denmark and between Argentina and Brazil, that is, 4 civs like in 2021…

They did whatever they wanted with the game… they never promoted it even in RBW, something I’ve been saying since 2021… you don’t want to give it a tournament, okay, but promote the expansions at least… how annoying, all the potential wasted, for not knowing how to promote a game… :man_facepalming:

To be honest, I don’t think that would changed anything in the end. This game has been doomed ever since WE was given the control of this series. Also, some major changed took place there in mid-2022, which is when the development of aoe3 was actually halted (it only took them like two years and a half to publically confirm it). That’s also when they stopped releasing regular DLCs for aoe2 and started with these weird “experiments”, most of which have been a failure btw, the only regular DLC they’ve released since then was the overpriced Mountain Royals.
I don’t think AOMR is enough to explain this. Idk, it feels like something is very wrong with World’s Edge, even beyond their disdain for aoe3

I can tell you what happend: The Activision acquisition.
Before that, games at Microsoft were basically a rounding error in their books. Xbox has never turned a profit, at times out of their own mistakes (red ring of death xo x360). But now when they wanted to spend that much money on games, other executies took a closer look at how the business is acutally doing. And its not great.
The result is that everthing was evaluated and only the profitable parts kept. Projects cancled, studios closed. Plus their hopes and Game Pass and Streaming have not being fulfilled.
To stop workig on AoE3 being one of the lesser games of the franchise is understandable from a business perspectiv. And games are a business, if you like it or not. If a product doesn’t sell well, its not worth continung. Thats just capitalism. AoE2 is were the most players are, AoE4 is also doing well enough. The F2P move for AoE3 would not have happend if the game had a large enough player base to justify continuied development, its a last ditch effort to get players. That move has historically worked for very few games, most of the time it was a death sentence.

I guess you are right, but that still doesn’t excuse how poorly they’ve treated the community, especially all the lies and how they made the annoucement right after the RTS sales on Steam.

And it’s also especially surprising for the case of AOE2, as if the game division were doing that poorly, they would still keep making regular DLC instead of these weird experiments. Unless regular AOE2 DLC aren’t doing as great as we assume.

It’s not dead, you will still be able to play it, servers will still work for AoE3. Game will be just fine.

As for no more new content, I don’t understand why this is a suprise to some people. AoE3 was never successful enough, how long do you want them to develop content for such a game with no profits? It’s a business, they have to make money. They made the game free to play in a last ditch effort, and AoE3 still didnt take off. That meant to me right then that AoE3 was done.

It got the DE treatment as well, new content as well after so many years (which btw was done thanks to World’s Edge being formed and taking over - people just cant appreciate things…), now left perfectly playable. Tell me how many more RTS games or games in general get such treatment. I don’t understand what the issue is. Keeping a team of people to work on it for new content forever costs a lot of money, it can only be done if the game brings that money back. It’s not a sacred sworn oath to keep working on this game forever.

Would you rather AoE3 didnt get the DE treatment at all and you were left playing the old version on hamachi and gameranger? You are fortunate World’s Edge was formed.

Maybe it comes as a surprise to people because the company announced a year ago that they were making another DLC? I don’t know how you could be so dense as to not understand that.

This is the kind of thing you say when you’ve never looked up stats on the game. You just think of it as “the unpopular one” but have no idea what you’re talking about.

Or, instead of crying, you can act like an adult, like we all are here, and understand that games have to make a profit. AoE3 has not. What was this new DLC about, two new civs and new campaigns? And after you’d get this DLC, you’d want yet another one and another one? For how long do they have to develop new content without being profitable personally for you to be happy?

Again, game is in a perfectly playable state, looking good with new graphics, people can do mods, they can still play it, what is the problem? How is it dead?

They made DE editions for all games in the series, likely knowing that some of them wouldn’t be profitable, but just to please all fans, for that I am grateful. We as AoE fans are lucky with such treatment. Check other old RTS and the state they are in.

Your only purpose here is to antagonize people. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you’re acting like an adult.

The vast majority of us expected this one last DLC, a couple patches to smooth over any issues introduced in that DLC, and then we could ride off gracefully into the sunset. I’ll add that the reason we expected this DLC is because, again, they promised it.
