[RoR] Civilization Idea: Harappans

The Harappans represent the Indus Valley civilization, the earliest settlement in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan that we know about. They were largely peaceful, or at least there is little evidence of warfare, so the civilization is focused mainly on defenses and economy. To reflect their focus on technological and economic development rather than warfare, nearly all of the bonuses save either time or resources during researches.

The Harappans would have a new South Asian architecture set that would also be shared with the Maurya and Guptas.

Civilization Bonuses

  • Wall technologies free (require Granary)

This references how the Indus Valley civilization had many walls around settlements.

  • Wood upgrades, farm upgrades, and Urbanization free

The free wood and farm upgrades reference extensive Harappan craftsmanship and agriculture, while the free Urbanization represents the Indus Valley civilization being the first ever urban center in India.

  • Dock and Government Center technologies cost -33%

The Harappans had advanced dockyards visible in ruins, and, being the first major civilization in India, made major strides in governmental authority.

  • Storage Pits work 50% faster

Storage Pit technologies are all armor or attack upgrades, and this bonus references Harappan metallurgy, which is particularly notable.

  • Team bonus: Slingers fire 25% faster

The only defensive weapons found at the Harappan ruins were clay balls fired at attackers from forts. These clay balls were typically thrown using slings or by hand.

Missing Units

Long Swordsman, Horse Archer, Cavalry, Camel Rider, Helepolis, Juggernaut, Fire Galley.

Missing Technologies

Afterlife, Monotheism, Zealotry, Ballista Tower, Chain Mail for Archers, Tower Shield, Coinage.

I think you have maybe a few too many tech based discount/freebie bonuses

Farm wood and wall free and govt are discounted not to mention storeage pit research rate

I feel like it might be a bit too much

Maybe an all generic discount bonus?

I would have suggest Indian/Indus valley civ have some sort of elephant bonus for example elephant units have +1 pierce armor since no civ has such bonus currently.
I agree there should be some civilization from India, but giving so much free techs as bonus I hardly agree.

Well, the Italians in AoE2 have only discount bonuses and no one complains.

Though I suppose free techs are quite a bit different from discounts…

Hence why if it was just a Chinese style all techs it might feel more meaningful and condensed

Yeah, that’s true. I think I went a bit overboard.

I feel like the faster Storage Pit work rate should remain, though.

The issue with that is that the Harappans have little connection to elephants aside from both being in India. I did at least give them access to all elephant units.

Good idea. I would like a civ connected to the Indian subcontinent in ROR.

Did you research for any campaign or wonder (to share with ancient Indian civs)?

Guptas are more for aoe2 imho given that their empire only started around 300 AD circa and began to disintegrate in the VI century because of hunas so they are contemporaries of Sassanid Persia, late Romans, goths, Huns etc.
Maurya would fit.
I’d really love if they add something to aoe1, it would justify that priced Ror.

Campaign, no, but the Wonder for all the Indian civs would be the Great Stupa of Sanchi.

I do think the Guptas should be in AoE2, but only if they add a Chariot regional unit. They fit more in AoE1 in terms of units already existing. And AoE1 does have the Yamato, which last until the early Middle Ages, so the Guptas aren’t that strange.

IVC/Harappans are way too much ancient for even Age of Empires 1. There isn’t much proof for them using weapons or having warfare.

Vedic Period Civilizations (Mahajanapadas) and later sound more logical to be included.

Oh yeah Yamato… That was a mistake since their campaign (that is not in Ror anyway) goes up until 750 AD which means you could add Franks in aoe1 as well.
Well for Asian civs periodization is different, usually middle ages is assumed to start after the fall of the Guptas but there were other Guptas after the VI century so I would still say they’re better for aoe2 overall but yes of course India needs other civs and regional units. They introduced a chariot already with Bengalis so they could add others as well.
Kushans could be a cool classical age civ for India since they were culturally influenced by Greeks.

The Phoenicians were also peaceful and largely focused on trade, yet they’re in the game too.

Phoenicians came 2500 years after IVC.

Yes, but I don’t think the period of time itself is that big of a factor. The bigger concern is about lack of warfare, which is why I brought up the Phoenicians.

Imagine modern age civilization fighting Phoenicians. (2500 years gap). Same is the gap between IVC and Phoenicians.

Beyond indus mod had harappans and mayurans and something else has civis.

Mauryans fighting Harappans. Cringe pro Max.

Don’t tell me they even give Harappans War Elephants as well. They didn’t have them.

Aoe is always like that not all the civis existed alongside each other.

Dont know about the elephants dont remember the tt.
