Hello everyone.
I’d like to request another feature: the ability to send independent orders to a selected subgroup when you have a mixed-unit selection. The behavior in AOEIV is almost perfect. In that implementation, you can iterate over unit groups within your selection and issue commands precisely to those subgroups, while the other units remain uninvolved.
They also added the ALL group which, as the name implies, sends the order to everyone. This is the default position. This has different use cases, most of them occurring when a battle is chaotic and you have a mix of unit types:
-
You need your fastest cavalry to attack a specific unit. You quickly surround units, iterate to your fastest ones, and invoke the attack.
-
You need to retreat as fast as possible from a location to avoid heavy damage from a GP. You could quickly select, tab, right-click in one direction, tab, right-click in another, and so on. I use this to simulate the runaway escape implementation from AOE2: tab, right-click, tab, right-click, fast, until I reach the last unit in the group.
What is not perfect in the AOEIV implementation is how group assignment works. Even if you have a subgroup in focus, the assignment applies to the entire selection, which is very frustrating. Notice that AOE4 allows a unit to belong to multiple groups, so it would have been natural to implement this properly.
Iterating in AOM right now is only partially useful: it lets you check unit stats or follow up with a focus, but not much else. A right-click, for example, moves the entire selection.
