Serious debate, Trading Post changed to 250 wood

In the first version of Age of Empires 3, the Trading Post cost 250 wood and had 3000 HP. In Asian Dynasties, it was changed to 200 wood and 2500 HP, a change that still exists today.

There is a growing debate about reverting this old change, the idea being to nerf several non-standard build orders altogether, for example, the Portuguese 10/10, the French 12/10, as well as other strategies like the British GMT.

So, I decided to open the serious debate in this thread, and also leave a popular poll. Thanks.

How much should a trading post built on a TP line cost for the average civilization?
  • 200 wood (No change)
  • 250 wood (like in the OG version)
0 voters

Clarification, this also leads to changing the cost of native TP to 125 w and 125 food and tTambos to 300 w.

Think there is a spot in the poll for a middle ground?

225 wood (With a proportional increase for native TP and Incan Tambos)

250 always felt like too much investment in the legacy game, and 200 does indeed leave too much room for petty builds.

remember when everyone cried about even a single no-tp map in the standard map pool? What if we made a tp unaffordable age 1 for everyone (except otto and USA [with their very logical and balanced free tps])

its also worth mentioning that tps were 25% stronger back then, the income from tps was nerfed.

Why make building a market a prerequisite for enabling TP?

The card ‘Advanced Trading Posts’ should provide a TP wagon in case the price increases.

250w tp= chinese immigrants finally recognized by people for the blatant powercreep it is

In my experience on the forum, those polls with multiple options are not very conducive to debate. But yes, it is a good option, but I prefer 200w or 250w, no middle ground.

What about Tambos? 300 wood?

and now because I’m thinking about it, this would be a massive buff for civs that don’t need a tp in matchups against tp dependent civs. Happy russia noises I guess

Wouldn’t this also be an even harder nerf on tp maps for civs that need to use their wood for other things such as Dutch and Russia? +50w makes a tp to contest a 4 or 5 tp stagecoach line even more unattainable imo.

this is always a reasonable approach when deciding on balance changes

Other ideas:

• Reduce TP hp to 2000.
• Reduce TP yield by 10% (think Dakota, we know it doesn’t break things).
• Increase build time.

Why reverting 18 years later? I hear no complains of TP’s cost.

i have no idea what this means

Dakota (the map) has a shadow tech which reduces the income from TP (or so I’ve been told?)

Edit: I think it’s 15% there, but doesn’t matter either way.

This is why we shouldn’t believe everything we are told by ignoramuses.

You are absolutely right

Choose between these 2:
  • 200 wood (As is)
  • 225 wood (Proportional increase for tambos)

You could also nerf build time (including for wagons). That would hurt these strategies without especially favouring the civs that get wagons.

250w would also benefit ATP and similar cards.

Bro why did you have to expose my secret?
